Plexiglass
    #1119646 - 12/07/02 10:16 AM (21 years, 3 months ago)

Whats up with plexiglass, can I get certain size pieces cut for me or do it myself? Or does it come in pre-cut pieces? I heard they sell it at my local hardware store but I couldn't find it. How would you cut it? And would I be able to sand down the edges to round it like the corners of a rubbermaid? I'd like to be able set the original lid on top of the plexiglass, and just leave the lid off when they need some light. When closed looks like regular rubbermaid. Any ideas or opinions or anything is greatly appreciated. Setup now isnt working out too well. Thanks!

Peace, love, etc.

most hardware places carry it. keep the original lid and cut the center out then glue(silicon) the plexglass aroung the edge to the white lid + duck-tape the edges..

you can have them cut it or like i did. torch + lighter + knife : start cut like this then break..

Home Depot will cut it to your specs right there for you.....if you need to cut it yourself, you just measure and mark the dimensions appropriate for your terrarium, leaving just a little space on each side, so it just fits in width-wise, and then score the marks with a razor knife (cut a bit more than half way through the depth of the plexiglass), apply pressure and it should break perfectly where you scored it (make sure you go deep enough, though, or it could just break anywhere...by scoring it you're creating the place of least resistance when pressure is applied).

what for, a dripshield?

You don't have to bother really. You could use clingfilm (saran wrap) if you want a dripshield, or just keep your humidity below the level where droplets form on the lid.

plexiglass is a unnecessary modification either as a drip shield or as a window on top of a rubbermaid terrariumn deal, a 10w fluro simply set on top of the container will be fine (even if the container is dark) i guess some people like them as a 'viewing window' into there terrarium...

Nah, not for a drip shield. I dont believe in them. Its for a "inner top". I want to view them, and make sure there is humidity on the top. I dont really want to cut a window, unless I have to, cause I'd like it to look like a regular rubbermaid if anyone were to ever go in my closet without me knowing. Thanks!

Peace.

if you can limit yourself to looking at them 2 or 3 times a day, you wont need to do anything to your terrarium...

A dremel tool w/side cutter bit works great on plexi, so does a roto zip

The Rubbermaid 18 gallon size containers have ridges in the right places. Have the store cut the plexiglass for you. It should be in a real small display near the window glass.

Ask around at hardware stores for scrap pieces of it, I paid $1 per piece, got about 6 good size pieces that I picked out of a bin of tiny scraps.

go to home depot, they have all kinds of different pre cut sizes. they usually have both a glass cutter and a plexiglass cutter, just ask one of the guys who works there to cut it for you. if you are using it as a lid then i would suggest some weatherstriping (you know that foamy shit that goes around the inside of your door to your house) to be used on the lip of the rubbermaid, that way the plexiglass will sit on it and make a good seal. you may need to apply some weight to the corners to make sure it sits flat. Also another idea instead of plexiglass is just plain glass. Glass can be cut to the size you want and it wont warp like plexiglass will over time. Hope that helps some.
