Birthing Questions...Is dunking and rolling worth it and how sterile should this stage be?
    #11199176 - 10/07/09 10:44 AM (8 years, 17 days ago)

I have read in different methods that when "birthing" everything is supposed to be as sterile as when inoculating the PF Tek cakes. I understand that it wouldn't hurt to be sterile when birthing and fruiting cakes but, if it's not 100% necessary,WoW! What a Pain in the Ass it would save.
Do I need to be as sterile when birthing my cakes as I had to be when innoculating?

After all-with some of mother nature's grace these things do grow in cow shit.

Dunking and rolling seems to be a good idea-correct me if im wrong. dont let the newb suffer. Please
So, I get the concept. 24 hour soak in water then a roll in some oven-toasted and cooled vermiculite. But-
Is it 100% necessary  to put them in the refrigerator?
I have read different methods using a "refrigerator shock" during the dunk giving better yields, and possibly helping the mycelium know it's time to stop growing and start fruiting.
Another method said to just dunk them on your kitchen counter in a pot with a plate to weigh it down, so I was unsure if temperature shock was needed.

Also, about the water-
Is tap water OK to use for the dunk or should distilled water or spring water be used?

Tap water is way cheaper than distilled. nuff said. Im a cheap ass.

Wash your hands well, that's as sterile as you need to be.
No need to use the fridge.
Tap water.

You make it all possible. Doesn't it feel good?

when i birth my cakes i take absolutely no sterile precautionary measures.
i dont even wash my hands anymore. there is no need for it.
the dunk and roll is a great little trick. i would most certainly take advantage of it.
