Alright, so I'll do the n00b thing and post pics of my jars that are only a few days old. 10/2 to be exact.
Sooooo, am I looking at cobweb, especially in the WBS jar? If so, then I suck at life because most if not all of my 26 quarts have it.
Oh and take a look at this
Is it normal to have LC blobs that are flat and disklike instead of blobs?

looks fine. definatly not cobweb which is grey and is rare in jars.

Yup, I knew too that I'd be posting early on about this. I've just never seen myc look so cotton like. Maybe because it's on top it looks different. Thanks for the replies!
The two jars are PESH, from my first LC. I've got about 26 quarts, and 16 pf pint jars right now. In a bit I'm gonna do up 14 pf pints and 2 quarts of Acadian Coast. The pf jars are an assortment of either BRF or DRF. And I have 1 pf and 1 wbs control jar set aside.
The LC in the picture is Texas. Yesterday it only had 1 nickel sized flat wisp of myc in there. I guess it 'sploded overnight.
Will only myc grow like that in a LC, not contam?

usually but you wont know it is contaminated till you use it anyway

That's why I'm avoiding LC's altogether. Seems like too much work for a "maybe".

Yeah I definitely want to get into agar also as soon as I get more monies. Right now I'm a little tapped out with the several hundred I've dropped into this thus far.
I figured I might as well do the lc and see if they work if I'm doing nothing else. Right now I'm researching g2g and grain lc's. Oh and brandnewbie they really are hardly any work at all.
Man! After about 60 jars so far I'm really really frustrated with micropore tape. I just got done in the glovebox and the tape is leaving sticky residue on the gloves. I might just cover the injection sites with silicon and make a breather hole in the middle so that I only have 1 piece of tape to mess with per jar.

agar is great, i just kinda suck at it, although i do have some clean PE in agar, but i use the agar to make a LC, then make a half dozen brf jars and test the LC, if it doesnt work than its not that much money lost, if it works than awesome, you got 6 cakes colonizing and your LC is viable.

From what I am looking up (going agar myself) agar is pretty cheap. 20 dishes for about $10 and agar powder about the same. And then apparently a glove box will suffice for the job too

I do my grain jar lid with 1 hole with RTV on it and 2 litle hole with micropore on it, so im not messing with it while innoculating.

And since we're talking about agar.. I get the theory behind isolates, but can you make an agar dish from an LC syringe to check it for contamination?

Smell it.
I have had cobweb and i have had myc.
If the jar smells like mushrooms it is myc.
If it smells foul/weird it is cobweb.
Noobies confuse myc and cobweb. Cobweb looks exactly like a cobweb, myc looks like nice white growth.

Well, I could start doing that too. My grain jars just have one 1/4" hole in the middle at the moment and 2 tyvek disks under the lid. I've been covering my holes with electrical tape and covering the lid with foil during PC'ing because I have this notion that it would keep out water better. Then I take off the electrical tape in my glovebox, inoculate thru the tyvek, and cover with micropore tape.
Although if I already have tyvek under the lid, then i could just leave my 1/4" hole for ge, and create a small injection port with some silicone. That way I could inject through the silicone, thru the tyvek, and not fuck with the tape at all eh?
You have no idea how much that sticky shit on my gloves irks me. The glue has built up on them to the point that, unbeknownst to me, some tape stuck to the back of my thumb and caught on fire while I was lighting my syringe tip and about caught my box on fire.

I appreciate the advice, but a pf tek might be easier for you guys to do than me. I'm unsure of my methods at the moment, and there are other extraneous variables besides my syringe that could lead my jar to contamming.
I mean a positive result, the jar colonizing healthily, would confirm it's good.
A negative result, contamination, would just leave me with questions I think. And I'd hate to throw out a syringe if I was just screwing up somewhere else.
Seems like agar would be harder to screw up. Or am I wrong about that?
