FINALLY! SOMETHING IN CT!
    #11198997 - 10/07/09 09:53 AM (8 years, 2 months ago)

So after many unsuccessful hunts around here for actives, I started growing a little weary. The other day I noticed a polypore (i forgot its name) growing from a tree log, so I went to go check it out. I climbed onto the log to get a better look and when I stood up, I had noticed my in laws had a compost pile formed of twigs and plants and whatnot in the way far back part of our yard. Obviously, I took a venture back there to check it out and what did I spot? What I thought was a Pan Foe. Regardless, I picked it and decided to print it (since there was another one just starting to pop up next to it,) This mushroom was already a decent size. About 2.5-3 inches tall, whiteish stem- you know the rest. I've seen plenty of pan foes around here (much to my discontent :frown:) but I went to check the spore print this morning and it was... BLACK!

I'll try to put some pictures up later on if more grow there. I just felt relieved I finally had a successful find (I wouldnt have called that a hunt xD) and felt the need to inform the community, especially anyone from connecticut, that Pan Subs *ARE* growing in CT.

Now I hope there's a way I can use one of those mushrooms that grow to start a controlled grow here myself instead of just hoping more show up...

Trust me, it's black. maybe it's harder to tell with the lighting and my camera. ill see if i can snag my wifes when she gets home right before she goes to work to take pics when no one else is here so i can use the fluorescent lighting. (because i dont want anyone here knowing 1. i do mushrooms and 2. i dont want them to find them :P)

make a mark with a black marker next to it and you will find that it's not black, bad lighting or not that's brown

Admiral Amanita, it is not that we don't want you to find what you are looking for, just that it is way past season for p. cincts in CT, conditions have not been right, the season is simply over. i understand the desire to want to find certain species, everytime this last week i saw honey mushrooms from a distance i was 'sure' they would be gyms, they weren't, i acccepted it. also, without your own pictures, it is futile for anyone to argue what you did or did not find, so you can understand peoples skepticism.

I quickly opened that pic in photoshop and corrected the exposure. It's most definitely brown then. I don't have the time now to upload the pic, but it is really very obvious.

Yeah seriously, even without checking out the picture in photoshop, you can see the reddish-brown tones to it.
I've seen some Panaeolina foenisecii prints there were NEARLY black except at a certain angle you could see the reddish brown light being reflected.

I'm noticing a common trend in the hunting and idenfication forums with regard to color. It seems people want something to be active so bad they almost see the spore print / bruising differently than everyone else. There's no way I'd call that black.

Us humans like doing that. We create all sorts of stuff everyday and forget its just one interperatation. Especially when theres a "reward", lets say Cincts, for interpereting something a certain way.

There have been recent posts of pan subbs found in rotting grass after a frost, so I wouldn't discount something based on the weather alone.

With that said, I recently found some psathyrellas in mulch that printed "blacker" than the above.

Ok, so this is the image corrected for exposure:

Note that the colors are not completely accurate due to white balance issues, but it's very clear that this print is not black.

Yea, compared to the words on the paper next to it, it looks slightly brownish.
