Cyans drying
    #1119838 - 12/07/02 02:34 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Since this is my first time nabbing cyans I could use some advice on drying.

I've set up a tupperware container with dessicant. The process seems to be slow (and having read the FAQ I think I'm going to put them under a fan for a while as well to speed the process).

Specific questions:

- The smaller shrooms seem to be blueing on top of the cap.. is this normal?
- How long until they become bone dry using just dessicant?
- What's your preferred method?

Thanks for any tips/help. I've dried cubies before but not cyans.. which are more meaty and tougher.

blueing in psilocybe cyanescen is prefectly normal, if they dry to slowly they will blue alot due to oxidation, finally turning to blackish if you really take your time drying. The best method for drying cyans is just to leave them out on a piece of paper or a cookie sheet, (any surface will do, but stay away from newspaper which make leak into the wet fruitbodies) space the mushrooms out so they are not touching to speed up drying. If you have a heater or a furnance put them close to that (no so they are really getting hot but just so they have increased airflow of dry air). Cyans dry for me in 48 hrs using that mehod and thats a prefectly accectable time frame for drying. Cyanescens and other cold weather temperate species dont have the mass to them that cubensis do and dry quickly, if they were cubensis you might wanna consider dessicant but its not needed with cyanescens. Hope that helps, its worked for me without fail over the years.

hi...bro

I usually dry my Cyans on paper towels on a dinner plate.
They don't really need to be dried like cubensis....IMHO.
Usually takes 2 days to get them cracker dry in our humidity.

If your in a hurry you could use other methods.

You guys are awesome. I'd never know this if it weren't for your experience and help.

I didn't want to ruin this batch so thanks!

I recently took cheesecloth I bought at Safeway for 2 dollars and thumbtacked it to the ceiling, spreaded them out on it, turned the space heater on in the bedroom, closed the doors, and let them dry. It worked well. After 36 hours they were just right, for the freezer. Last year I ruined a bunch on newspaper and the lowest temp in the oven. I also went to Pagliagis Pizza place and asked the cashier if I could have a wicker pizza slice plate thing, she asked me why I wanted one, and I told her so I could dry my shrooms out on it then she looked at me funny and said ok. So I took two of them. They work well too it helps to find a way to get air to circulate around them.

I just read up on drying shrooms. Being a chemistry student it makes to most sense to use the dry ice method. Displacing oxygen from a sealed mason jar with dry ice (pure CO2) will not give oxygen a chance to oxidize the psylibin present in shrooms. I read it in the Erowind Vaults drying section. It called for drying them 24 hours and putting them in a blender. I am not going to do that but will leave the shrooms whole and displace the oxygen by putting a chunk of CO2 (dry ice) in the bottom of a jar and letting it release the CO2, just after the CO2 has totally decomposed close the lid and capture most of the CO2 in the jar. Closing the jar before the CO2 is used up will cause an extreme pressure inside the glass and it will break. So dont do that. let it evaporate first then close the lid and capturing most of the gas in the jar. Oxygen wont be present in the jar and it wont oxidize. It should help preserve the potency of the shrooms.

I just laid mine out for 2 days at room temp. They dried nicely without any dessicant or fanning.

They were cracker dry and have held their potency very well.

yeah just put up high so the heat will get to them. up in a closet with a small fan for circulation is what seems to work best for me. you dont even need to aim fan toward the plate/towel, if it's up in a closet.
