    #1119744 - 12/07/02 01:35 PM (14 years, 3 days ago)

I'm fortunate to have the chance to take a "history of Buddhism" class next semester. here is my booklist. I am curious, has anyone read these books? if so, any good?

1. Land of Bliss: The Paradise of the Buddha of Measureless Light: Sanskrit and Chinese Versions of the Sukhavativyuha Sutras (Studies in the Buddhist)
by Luis O. Gomez (Translator)

2. Classics of Buddhism and Zen: The Dhammapada, the Buddhist I Ching, Stopping and Seeing, Entry into the Inconceivable, Buddhist Yoga
by Thomas Cleary (Hardcover - October 2002)

3. Absolute Delusion, Perfect Buddahood: The Rise and Fall of a Chinese Heresy (Nanazan Library by Jamie Hubbard)

4. Primer of Soto Zen: A Translation of Dogen's Chobogenzo Zuimonki
by Dogen, Reiho Masunaga

5. The Bodhidharma Anthology: The Earliest Records of Zen (Philip E. Lilienthal Book)
by Bodhidharma, Jeffrey L. Broughton

6. The Zen Teachings of Master Lin-Chi
by I-Hsuan, Burton Watson

7. Buddhism in China
by... i don't know...

long book list... I'm very anxious to take this course, which is a great feeling. any thoughts on the matter, or the booklist??

I have read 1,4,6 Albeit yrs ago.Challenging mentation for westerners but well worth the perspectives they provide.Much like the psychedelic state , deep meditations of the sutras can make for conflicts/integrational difficulties with western cultural demands(it can be difficult to ponder one thought for yrs and make a living) but also like psychedelics they CAN force new neural connections and increase ones "capacity of understanding" so to speak.I take it this is a sociology class? If so then the study may be somewhat cursory, however Eastern philosophy is fascinating and well worth investigating .I now am content with a simple book of meditations and find it amazing the differing perspectives and paths that meditating on the same thoughts over the yrs can produce( I believe they induce a trance state by a form of sensory deprivation).Enjoy the class and if it seems to ring a bell with you perhaps pusue it further,Bon Chance  :wink:WR

This is an Asian Studies class. I'm taking it to fulfill a non-western cultural class requirement.
I have been reading the Way of Zen, albeit slowly... It is fascinating, and i'm really looking forward to this class. to be able to converse with 20 other people and an instructor about this stuff will be interesting. I'm hoping it's an intimate class.
thanks for your insight!

i haven't read any of those.
i did take a buddhist class though and have read some books...

if somebody out there is looking for a "more accessible" book i'd recommend something by thich nhat hanh.

some of those zen books sound interesting. zen is one of the few east asian things about buddhism that interest me. pure land makes me smile, but not cause i believe in it.... it's just kinda silly in a way.
