Pan Cyan Substrate?
    #11197371 - 10/07/09 12:30 AM (8 years, 2 months ago)

Hey all,

I am about to try my hand at Pan Cyans. First thing I did was make an LC which took off wonderfully. I had been thinking about using WayLit's Pan Cyan tek (its from mycotopia, I hope its okay to mention that here). The tek is essentially verm, BRF, Hpoo (i'm using worm castings) in jars PF-style, then fruited from the jars.

I just inoculated a bag of rye grain with the Pan cyan LC, so I'm thinking I'll do a bulk substrate instead. What should I use in the sub? Can I just use the waylit tek's recipe, but in a tub and spawn to it with rye? Any other recipes?

I have verm, worm castings, BRF, and Coir. I just CAN'T get any type of manure where I live. Same thing with straw. However if there's a recipe that calls for poo I am going to go ahead and replace it with the castings. I've heard that works.
So, using what I got, what kind of Pan sub can I make? This is my first time with pans so I'd prefer not to wing it, but to use a recipe that's been proven.

Any input would be awesome!

Horse manure is all I would recommend for Pan. Cyans.
Use 1-1 1/2" h-poo sub and a casing about 1/4"(I like jiffy mix).  Make sure you have a good FC for them,  they don't do well as mono-tubs.
Good luck and keep us updated.

they r not as forgiving as cubes are.
im just starting out with pans as well. its like the first time i tackled cubes so im learning all new stuff even after reading so much about them.

so, do you mean you use 100% hpoo as a sub? I would be using worm castings instead of hpoo by the way. I've heard that works in waylits tek. Are there any pan teks that use coir?

this is a very good thread for you to read
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/8071299#8071299

but to my understanding you will need poo in the substrate.
it seems you can add coir to fluff stuff up a bit but not as a substitute.
waylits tek atleast what i read doesnt say anything about casings as a substitute. and ive never heard of anyone using them to grow pans on. lol i barely see anyone using them at all though
im not saying the mix has to be all 100% poo just saying you will need it in there and in good amounts

I have used worm castings and nursery bought cow poo successfully. I use 33% poo and 33%straw cut very short (1/4 - 1/2 inch) and about 33% verm.

The cow poo I bought had little chunks of wood in it. Just pick it all out

WayLit told me that you can use worm castings in his tek without problem. Worm castings are poo... just of a different sort.

I was thinking of simply using his simple recipe as a bulk substrate. Its just verm/poo/brf. I was just unsure if that would work outside of jars.

Your recipe sounds good Walrus. I don't have straw though...

i knew that worm castings were poo but i figured there was a huge difference in the poop you get from worms and from horses
since worms just pretty much eat dirt and poop dirt i wouldnt think it was very nutritious for a fungi, where as horses eat grain and through their different type of stomachs poop out something completely different.
tl;dr worm poop is more like compost

good luck man, because so far i havnt seen any grows like the one you're planning
keep us updated

True, I'm going to have to pray it works. I think the castings will be very dense so I'm trying to decide a good way to lighten it up with verm and coir.

If this is your first Cyan grow try to keep it simple and use Horse manure.
Worm casing my work, but Cyans are dung lovers so grow them on dung.  It is like trying to grow a wood lover on dung,  it my work but it isn't going to be easy or as healthy.
Dung= equine/bovine manure or any straw/hay eating animal.

LOL.. Trying to make things difficult.
But it would no longer be dung then,  after the dung goes through the worm it comes out as more of a compost.

The reason I have been so adamant about using worm castings is because I haven't been able to find hpoo anywhere. Literally 5 minutes ago I passed a florist shop that had bagged cow manure (not sure, could have been composted cow manure). Would that work? That is definitely the closest I'm going to get to horse dung here in harlem...
