The Machines of War.
    #11197367 - 10/07/09 12:29 AM (8 years, 15 days ago)

I was watching the History Channel about an hour ago and they were airing a program on the future of robotics. The had many great machines that could prove useful. However, every time they showed one it's abilities were immediately applied to militant purposes. They had a remarkable, nearly biological, (in movement) four legged carrier bot to move weapons into war zones. They showed an exoskeleton that would allow soldiers to carry heavy loads into battle. They touched on the subject of designing warrior bots capable of radical free thought. I am truly blown away by man's desire to create such amazing technologies for the sole purpose of killing his fellow man. Don't get me wrong, I understand the reasons for conflict and what we have to do to keep our "freedom." I know that human kind is nowhere near racial or religious harmony but this will never push us in that direction. We may know harmony when we are all dead. Then what was the point anyway? What do you guy's think?

War always spurns tech advancements.

And novel technologies are always applied militarily.

I.E.

Locomotion

Farm Tractors to Tanks

or

Microwaves.

Radar research to popcorn

I know it sounds like I'm a burned out hippie but I just wish there was peace in the heart of man. I just want to wander the land, a land unscathed by asphalt and depleted uranium. No 9 to 5 toil to earn paper to buy goods laced with chemicals. Nearly an aboriginal like existence.

Such is not the destiny of man.

Just as soon as we discovered agriculture and began to value land, we began to kill each other en masse for it.

We will continue to do so unfortunately.

As it should.

War had its place. We should view societal problems as a way to tech advancement instead of conflict.

Although we have a lot of products developed through war to be thankful for.

Plastics?

Like it or not, war is part of human nature.

I highly doubt that's going to change unless we evolve beyond it or something which isn't going to be for a looooooooong time.

j3s, and photography, daguerreotypes, etc...

Sometimes technology, war, and pornography all work together in concert, like in daguerreotypes for wanking Civil War soldiers...

Exactly! I'm always reminded of the phrase "We don't negotiate with terrorists." Again I understand we must retaliate against the atrocities these people have made us suffer through. But if the possibility of negotiation is off the table then there can never be coexistence. An example would be finding out the problems of these countries and using technology to solve them. Help your neighbor. Unless these people have pure unadulterated hatred for their fellow man.

Cool. Film is still important, I think.

In fact, I think maybe it's more important now that most things are moving to digital. Real film and printing stands out more, now.

I shun digital cams.

I got my Bronica 120mm from my dad. I refuse to go digi.

Back on topic.

Humans are too warlike to ever advance through peaceful methods.

humans need to create another species or robot to battle with in order for everyone to band together and love our fellow man in a species war.. there goes race wars... once the human sees itself a little less individualistically
we will learn to be united, truly.

this is what the radical thinking war machines will be when their AI's develop fully.

Terminator anyone?

There is dude.  You are just viewing the cup as half empty.  Most humans alive today never fight in a war, never kill another person and do like and want peace.  All you need is a slight change in perspective and you can realize your wish is in fact reality.
