I love my mate gourd and the green goodies inside

although I've heard drinking from the gourd is carcinogenic:sad:

I need to clear this up. According to studies its because of using hot yerba.

Other than that i love yerba. Its super brain power but it does kind of make me tweak a bit.

However, there have been many studies on the association between mate-drinking and cancer in humans, and there is limited evidence connecting the drinking of hot mate and the development of esophageal cancer. Some research has suggested that this effect is almost entirely a consequence of hot mate's temperature; similar links to cancer have been found for tea and other beverages generally consumed at high temperatures.

yerba kinda gives me a little bit of a lift. I feel really relaxed and re-energized.
I've heard studies that claim yerba causes cancer in the throat, heart studies it prevents cancer of the kidney/bladder etc. I really hope it's not carcinogenic...that make me sad.

Relax just drink the yerba. Id also agree it tastes great. Iv been drinking it for over 3 years and I can say it tastes nothing like it did day 1.

Carcinogens are found in many foods--as are offsetting cancer-fighting chemicals--but in small quantities. If we wanted to avoid all carcinogens, we'd have to stop eating altogether. But there are 10 milligrams (mg) of known carcinogens in a single cup of coffee. To put that into perspective, 10 mg is probably more than all the synthetic pesticide residues you could get from eating non-organic food for an entire year. In one cup.

You can find tons of places to buy it online. The roasted stuff tastes better than the plain stuff, but it's more expensive (still not bad though). Usually you buy the stuff in kilo or half-kilo increments.  [In addition to online, I've found some South American restaurants that sell kilos of it, and some Mediterranean import places (odd, eh?) that sell it as well]

It's best taken traditionally through a gourd and bombilla.  Set the bombilla (filter-straw thing) in the gourd, and fill the gourd about halfway with mate.  Boil a pot of water, and pour some hot water over the mate to fill the rest of the gourd.  Sip through the bombilla. Add more hot water to the gourd. Repeat.

The first pull or two can be pretty bitter, but it mellows out into a great flavor after that.

I dont like the cleanable bombillas because they leak a little at the connection between the spoon and straw.  Where could I get a non-cleanable one that doesn't leak there?

FYI dont boil. Heat it up to a comfortable temperature that does not burn. studies say boiled water that is to hot leads to esophageal cancer(as does other hot liquids, tea and cofee). I find when the steam starts to rise is the best.

/me is waiting for Tea to add his input. He drinks drinks it like every day.

A good friend of mine lived in Argentina for a while and the family she was staying with gave her yerba mate and she said it made her feel insane. She said she got light headed, became slightly disoriented, her skin tingled, then she became nauseous. I find that really strange because she takes adderall and drinks a lot of coffee everyday. Then again, I bet yerba mate and adderall probably isn't the best combo.
