?'s about my terrarium
    #1119716 - 12/07/02 01:13 PM (14 years, 5 days ago)

okay i have a terrarium set up in a rubbermaid bin with a 3 gallon fish tank on one side and a submersible heater inside, then situated on the remaining part of the rubbermaid i have 4 inoculated jars of B+, lately i've been checking in every once in a while and the temperature inside is averaging 85 degrees. Is that too high or is that alrite? I haven also noticed that there is a lot of water dripping off the lid of the bin and there are a few puddles begning to form on the bottom. WIll that matter with my jars set on the bottom and are there any other problems i may have or suggestions you can offer me about the terrarium. i am new to this and your help is greatly appreciated!

I'd say that 82 would be best since the jars create a lil heat when working/eating the food. 86 is optimal. but 85 is alright if u dont want to change :/

Don't know about your water problem.

>rubbermaid bin with a 3 gallon fish tank on one side
you should probably use a 2 litre bottle or some shiat, put it in the center too so heat is more evenly distrobuted...
>temperature inside is averaging 85 degrees
this should probably be a bit lower, if air temp is 85, substrate temp is probably in the high 80's...
>few puddles begning to form on the bottom.
stagnant water can cause contamination problems....
>that there is a lot of water dripping off the lid of the bin
this is probably due to the hot water from the 3 gallon tank evaporating, sealing off any place for water to evaporate from will probably take care of this.... you may also want to try leaving your bins lid slightly ajar...

No you don't, you have an incubator.

It can be, as Rawtoxic pointed out, stagnant water can become a vector for contaminates. Just line the bottom with some paper towels and change every so often.

Hi,
You might want to try this,

Hmmmm  I'm thinking of how I can say this.....

Put your tank of water inside of your rubbermaid.  Cover the tank with a plexiglass lid.  Then put your jars ontop of that lid, then cover up your rubbermaid container.    (hope that made sense)

AFOAF has never had a problem with cakes going dry even while they were just sitting in a box in a closet somewhere.  And my friend has been doing it for years.    My friend also told me that a slightly dry cake is better than a wet soggy cake.  And you have more chance of getting a soggy cake if they're sitting in water.

Remember to keep your lids tights after inoculation and you'll be surprised how little (if any) moisture at all escapes from your jars.

Although if you do live in a dry area, you may want to keep the setup you have simply put your submersible heater on a timer.

Everyone like to do things differently, you do what you think is best!
