if it's allright I'm going to use this thread to ask questions as I go along instead of making a bunch of noob question threads and pissing everyone off.
sorry, broke my camera at the slayer concert a month ago, so I can't post pics for awhile.
I'm using brown rice flower and verm in my jars
anyhoo.. so I've already started 6 jars, everything went alright until after I sterilized, my holes were too small for the syringe  so I took some advice from here and went ahead and took the lids off, made the holes bigger and just put them in the pot to sterilize again.
now I noticed that when I took the lids off, the top layer of dry verm was a little damp, and there was a lot of condensation on the bottom of the lid.. is this a bad sign?..
it's not soaked or anything, and you can still see a distinct separation of the layers.
I'm using tinfoil to cover them and medical tape for the holes... the jars are elevated off the water with some jar lids on the bottom, a layer of tinfoil on top of those, then I cut the bottoms off some beer cans for the top layer where the jars are sitting... I have the temp set just high enough that the water keeps boiling.
any advice?

lids off bad idea. could have fixed with a screw driver. 2 damp verm and condinsation normal but would start over since you took the lid off. 3 just start over you havent lost much so far but reusing my hurt you later

I would put a new layer of dry vermiculite on every jar, as that has already gotten wet and been disturbed. It would be about as simple to just reload the jars.

so you mean take the lids off again right now (been sterilizing for about 1:20 mins) put another dry layer on... then re-sterilize again?

that would be starilizing it 3 times i would doubt you will have many nutreants left after all that. just start over or keep it the way it is

you dont have too not trying to be a downer but so far you lost like 2$ in stuff better to do it right from the begining so you wont loose so much later if stuff didnt work out. good luck

alright, so they just came out of the pot... just cooling down now
when I inoculate them, it's alright to use a lighter for sterilizing the needle right?... that black shit that ends up on it is nothing to worry about?
or do I absolutely need an alcohol flame... please tell me I don't

you can use a lighter, I do sometimes. the black stuff is just carbon, wont hurt anything.
they just dont burn as hot so it takes a little longer to get red hot

I didn't take the tape that was covering the holes on the top off my first 4 jars while inoculating... will this cause any problems you figure?

phew
and I've been reading that re-taping the holes right at the beginning will build co2 in the jars which helps mycelium growth, after a certain amount of time take off the tape then turn the jars upside down to let it escape and increase oxygen content... this true.. or pointless?
and they don't need any light during the incubation process correct?... room just needs to be at room temp approx?

light isnt necessary
and just leave the holes open they arent big enough to let too much c02 out but they still let enough out to allow metabolic gas exchange.
room temp is fine 55-80 degrees, and i have heard of colonization at even greater high and low extremes, but less than about 78 keeps contams from being able to take hold (as readily atleast).
and above 60 maintains a good speed of growth

You can just leave them on a shelf after inoculation. No need to cover the holes or make sure they remain in absolute darkness.
