They don't look like Gymnopilus to me. Gyms have attached gills too, btw.

Is this all one species?
*edit: "attached" to the stem... you wrote "free gills," unless that was the one you picked because it sounded good.

Gills look like this:
http://www.messiah.edu/Oakes/fungi_on_wood/gilled%20fungi/images/Gym%20spectabilis%20LG.jpg
What I'm more concerned with is, "Are there any that look like gymnopilus spectabilis that could be potentially lethal (or at the very least, have some pretty serious nauseating mycotoxins?)?

No, "free" in this case means not attached to the stem. This means that you should be able to remove the stem without ripping the gills off with it. Gymnopilus have attached gills.
Those pics aren't a G. spectabilis listing. They are a G. sapineus listing -- said to be active by some sources.
Without some good macro shots, we just can't ID definitively.

What's with all the people showing pictures of tiny yellow mushrooms and asking if they're Big laughing gyms?

I can give you the long lecture or I can just say: don't eat un-ID'ed mushrooms. A spore print would help in this case.

I'm taking the print right now, what color am I looking for? The gills ARE connected to the stem. I didn't realize that's what that meant, sorry.

EXACT same coloration. The images leave them looking a lot lighter than they are (in real life they're more clearly yellow).

your looking for a rusty orange spore print. Although some look-alikes have same color print, try posting a picture of the print. I had to do microscopy on my last Gymnopilus luteus find, to prove that it was not Pholiota sp.

I was curious about that, the Pholiota I mean... I did some googling and found recipes for them...with other people saying they're poisonous. DO gyms have poisonous look a likes? I checked out out some of the pholiota pics and don't really seem to have a match on them. I'm wondering about local resources (USM and what not) and maybe getting a local mycologist to ID.
Is there any chance of hooking up with fellow Hunters locally for IDing or is that just...against policy?

Look at pics in my gallery and see how exactly close your finds match up to mine
If there is any questions whatsoever - you should just keep on Hunting and toss yours!!
Don't get too worked up about your find here - remember your spot and spring and fall bring gym flushes from the same spots year after year
Your pics aren't good enough to say alone If all of those pics are "supposed laughers" - you gota keep hunting
Gyms taste EXTREMELY BITTER - have a PERSISTANTLY HIGH ANNULUS - and good pins will bruise blue-green
Lots of lookalikes can have same or similar spore color Physical features and Exact locations( like what kind of wood ) help LOTS

No one has identified them, nor proffered up a reason that they are not gymnopilus of any species.
I am not desperate, as I have a friend who produces B+ regularly and they're affordable.
However, I'm not wasteful, and would like very much to find if this is what I should look for in the future.
Thank you very much, Wiscokid, and they're on pine (I think). It's a log and I'm not super great with barks.

lots of people stated why they arent gymns. they dont look like gymns to me either, Gymns are never THAT transparent, wheres the annulus? you probably have a Hypsizygus sp, if u were so interested in finding out what those were you might get a better camera and take some better pics.
the experience from gymns has been said to be different from your ordinary psilocybin trip, why risk mushroom poisoning over something you might not even enjoy?

The one that I held up that looks transparent has some sort of rot to it, half the gills are missing. The ones on the log are the ones I'm almost certain of.
I'll admit that some of the Hypsizygus do look close in shape, but none that I saw were even close in color.
I have another post that is about gyms, orange ones...those printed the right color...I haven't got a print off of these yet, though.
What's the worst I'm risking with a look a like though? I haven't found any poisonous look alikes?

if you are willing to believe these look like gyms you could definitely mistake jack-o-lanterns for them, be careful.

I checked out Jack-o-Lanterns and the worst I'm risking is abdominal discomfort, correct?
At any rate, those have weird gills and thicker stems. The gills on Jack-offs start lower than these do...I appreciate that extremely though Masspan, I've been waiting for people to give me some look-a-likes.

Armellaria species may also look 'similar' at a glance. and instead of abdominal discomfort read 'severe gastrointestinal distress' sometimes lasting for days, not to be messed with imo. don't be too eager, it is time very well spent to be sure.

you could die if you eat the wrong kind of mushrooms. give yourself some time to find the good ones and get a positive ID before you ingest anything

You've been given many lookalikes already. Your mushrooms aren't Jacks either. Masspan was giving lookalikes for GYMS.
You seem to think that trying to convince us is going to help you in some way. The Shroomery is not a mushroom ID'ing business. Anyone could come into your thread and say "Go ahead, those are fine to eat." If they were a poisonous mushroom, and you heeded their advice, whose fault is it ultimately?? Yours. All I'm saying is that you're placing undue stress on the people here who don't want you to get hurt. Who in their right mind would want something like that on their conscience either? Luckily, as you can tell, the people in here are of much sounder mind and of great knowledge when it comes to fungi, so when they say that there's no way to definitively ID something, trust me, it's true!
Honestly, as CureCat suggested, Gyms are a different experience and even if you had one or two, they would not create a significant buzz. At this point, I seriously recommend buying those cubes you mentioned and considering the position you're putting other people in.

For Gymnopilus. the most concerning "look-a-like" would be Galerina marginata, which also grows from wood, is often orange, and also has a rusty, orange/brown spore print.
*by ShroomyDan
Though I do not think that you have Galerina here. They certainly are not Gymnopilus either. Hypsizygus or Pholiota are good guesses.

Here is apic a posted and took to show another member the difference between g.luteus and some deadly galerina that all grow on the same log at the same time!!
http://
to the trained eye - there are big differences
but its very likely a way too eager newbie hunter could grab the deadlies too.
Keep hunting and learning - its the only way to do it
ive waited year after year - and still am waiting yearlong intervals - to re-find and positively id certain finds..........Patience Pays Off -
