by chance, I have an idea.

an idea, is all it is, though.

looks a bit like Boletus chrysenteron with the cap splitting as it is.

that mushrooms is not active, and looks way too old to be used as an edible mushroom, throw it in the compost

Thank you Cyanophilus. I think that is pretty close to the same coloration, closer than we have been able to find. We found a bunch more of this same one and they all have almost perfectly flat tops and are split as well.
We did not pick those of course and will try to get more pics. We have snow up here now which makes it fun and easy to get back down the hills.
There is another Bolete we keep seeing up here that is a really short one with light brown top, usually along the roads. We will post up some pics of those either today or tomorrow in another post.
I just want to say thank you to all of you great people that are dedicated to helping out n00bs like us properly I.D. what we can not quite figure out.

Looks like a very mature specimen of Boletus chrysenteron. They really turn black/blue after a while. Check out these younger ones that have just started to bruise:

If you break the flesh on the cap of a chrysenteron, you'll note that the flesh inside is pink colored and will turn golden/brown with oxidation.
