Measurements Confusion
    #11193288 - 10/06/09 12:08 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Hi there!

Someone pls help me, i just don't understand some measurements like

"PARTS"

What is one part??

10 parts peat moss
10 parts vermiculite
1 part gypsum

10 parts based on what?? What a "part" consist of??

I was wondering if 10 parts = 1KG then 1 part = 100g?

                if 10 parts = 500g then 1 part = 50g??

Hope someone could helpe me cause i never seen this before, i'm from Brazil and maybe this is an US measure.

Its a ratio.

If you had 2 parts A and 1 part B you would always add twice as much A compared to B.

relace PART with a measurement of your choice..

1 part water
1 part BRF
2 parts VERM

for example is like saying

1 cup water
1 cup BRF
2 cups verm

but is also the same as saying

1 bucket water
1 bucket BRF
2 buckets verm

and is also just like saying

3 cups water
3 cups BRF
6 cups verm

the last example a PART was equal to 1.5 cups..

get it??

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

Or one liter. Or whatever. Just that it's equal from item to item.

Its a ratio. Its whatever measurement you want.

A part isnt a cup.

Its a recipe to make as much substrate as YOU need.

good you got it..

a part is whatever you want it to be.. just replace "PART" with your measurement of choice (whatever fits the situation for you) and maintain that measurement. this will make sure that your ratios are always the same.

It sometimes helps to think in percentages.

10 parts peat moss
10 parts vermiculite
1 part gypsum

Basically

50% peat moss
50% vermiculite
1% or small amount of gypsum (I know it's actually over 100% but you get the idea.)

a part is ANYTHING YOU WANT. if the ration is 1 to 1, then it can be one cup to one cup, one pound to one pound. really anything you want that is measurable
