My friend had an emergency today and had to move his cakes to another county an hour away. He did his best to get them their quickly and without tipping them over (they were still in the rubbermaid box with perlite on lids), obviously he failed. The shrooms that were on the cakes were broken off and when he go to his destination he put the box in the closet, cleaned off the perlite stuck to the cakes and let them sit upright again. It's hot and in Florida too so the drive in the trunk wasn't too forgiving I'm sure.
He noticed rust on the jar lids he had the cakes on, and the cakes had a brownish color to them. He just called me and said he sees a green mass near the bottom of two of the cakes, definitely doesnt look like bruising he said. He cut it off with a knife and did his best to do it sterile.
What does he do if two cakes have this and one doesn't? He thinks he oversprayed and + the heat it got too moist and forgiving of an environment for mold during the drive. Should he toss the two contams or what? Clean out his whole chamber? Is it possible for cutting off the mold to work?

calm down.. if the cakes were fully colonized, they are prolly fine..
if the temp in the trunk was below 106, they will be fine
remove any broken fruits, stick em in the FC and as i say over and over
let it be...

Try giving them a quick dunk and rinse off to if they fell and were sitting in perlite and rust

it was prolly bruising.. mold does not take over in a few hours like that (normally) but its still ok the cut cakes may have to recover for a day or 2

Okay the original cake that didn't show any mold is fine. The two I rinsed off, cut the mold off of and redunked in vermiculite seemed to be doing better but I just checked and one of them appears to have a lighter color green mass growing again.
This time its a little more confusing, looks like its new mycelium growing but with green? Should I discard this cake? The other one seems to be alright for now but is growing a white mass (no color) over some of the vermiculite - is this mycelium or the beginning of more mold? I'm worried since the other one grew the mold again it will too.

i dont think its mold
mold doesn't just show up after a lil car ride
was there any 'mold" on the cakes before the move? i would bet it is bruising
the myc is going to bruise when it is cut with a knife also a few pics would really help

Based on everything I've heard about bruising, this is mold. It is a mass, it has substance to it and grows in bulges over certain parts of my cakes. The cakes were sitting on rusty lids, cause my friends an idiot maybe that + heat + overspraying = quick mold development?
I isolated the one that keeps growing the green substance vigorously. I'll keep a close eye on the other one and the one that never had mold on it. Hopefully I can salvage them both.

Lol, I hope I didn't just break a perfectly fine cake up into the ground for nothing but I will provide pics as the other one changes (if it does). It looked way too much like mold to me, I don't see how bruising and mold could ever be mistaken. When I wiped my finger on the green stuff when I first discovered it, it rubbed off on my finger with color to it I believe.

Sounds like bruising to me too.
Cakes are a little more forgiving then anything else in this hobby when it comes to green mold, if it just so happened to be the start of trich (unlikely) then he may have been able to save them by removing that section with a deep cutt, I've seen strong enough cubensis cultures hold off ground from trich for three flushes. Pray that that it was not green mold and that the cakes have extremely good genetics.

Could you describe bruising then, cause if you read everything I have posted, everything points to mold unless I'm missing something.

easy test is the q-tip test as suggested by Doc_T.
grab a q-tip and swipe the area.. look at the q-tip.. did the q-tip pick up the color or not??
if the q-tip did NOT pick up the color, its bruising if it DID, then its a contam.

Okay, then what I have is definitely not bruising. And I didn't get a chance to q-tip it before I got rid of it but the green did come off on my fingers.

What do I do as far as preventing it from coming back? I can't really clean out my environment cause they are growing in it and perlite and alcohol are not nearby. Do you think it's okay as long as I keep a close eye on them?
