there's lots of things that can indicate a transmission problem, far too
many to list, it's difficult to diagnose over the net and even more
difficult through a 3rd party

it would be easier if the friend explained the problem that leads him to
believe it's the transmission

If he gasses it and hears a grinding sound and the car doesn't take off right away, that's a dead giveaway.

Also, if the car had never had it's trans fluid changed for a really long time, then you put new stuff in, that is like instant death for the trans. A lot of people do this and eff themselves when they think they have trans problems.

its an automatic, and she said that it is abnormally loud today, (it already doesnt have a muffler) and she said that when she hits the gas, its like the car doesnt respond quick like a normal working car would.

Not necessarily; they used automatic boxes back in 88 as well.

These are the straightforward checks you can easily run yourself:
Automatic: check for any weird noises from the gearbox, check if it shifts smoothly, if you put it into reverse, it should kick in more or less immediately (same with neutral --> drive), check maintenance documentation if the fluid was changed at the prescribed intervals.
Manual: hold clutch down, put it in neutral, rev up the engine and let the clutch come on; there should be no grinding noises, shocks or any other stuff. Nothing should happen and the stick should remain still (slight tremor is ok; you're in a car...), if the box and clutch are alright. Check if every gear change is smooth and noise and shock-free.

Yup. That's the transmission. Happened to mine about a month ago. I had put off doing a full flush on the transmission fluid for years, and afterwards the whole first gear went caput. I had to sell it for parts and get a refurbished one. With the installation, the repair is setting me back a little over $2000.

I know she wont have an answer to that question.  Can I have her bring it over, let it sit for an hour, then check the trans fluid lvl to see if its low?  Or is that pointless to do at this point in the game.

Sorry, missed that. Doesn't sound too good, really. See how long it keeps up, then recycle the car or change the gearbox if you're attached to the vehicle or like a nice bit of DIY vehicle repair.

How many miles has that oldie run by now?

If she does, take it out for a little drive. On mine it was like it skipped the first gear all together and would only accelerate right at a faster speed.

Seriously if the trans fluid has never been changed dont put new stuff in.

The old stuff builds up and like literally binds to the gears. New fluid has detergent in it and when you put it on the old stuff the metal that the gears are made out of will get real soft like charcoal and it is only a matter of time until they grind themselves away.

If you haven't kept up with fluid changes it is the worst thing you can do for your car.

Yup. That's the transmission.

it could also be a vacuum leak, air getting past a gasket on the engine
can cause that hesitation as can a carbeurator problem. with most auto
trannies they have  a modulator valve that works on engine vacuum, if
the line becomes disconnected or lacks adequate vacuum or just goes bad
then it will present a hard shift problem, one that takes far longer for
the transmission to shift (higher RPMs) as well as when it shifts it
just about breaks your neck

these things wold appear to be a transmission problem but they arent,
it'll also make it far more difficult to tell by sound when the car has
no muffler, that's something that can lead to a burnt valve and also
case some of the sluggishness the car is experiencing

make sure you look at the fluid and smell it, if it's brown instead of red
or smells burnt, it needs to be changed, it'll be a better idea to check
it's level and condition while the car is idling in park or neutral

That's very true. Like I said, I think he'll have to take it out for a spin. Mine didn't jerk abnormally when I shifted so I figured it had nothing to do with pressure.

Edit: BTW Pris, your avatar isn't working.

dude... that gunk you're talking about is the lining on the clutches and bands, that stuff coating everything leads to the problem, the gears are made from STEEL and that crap leads to premature wear on them

Alright, does anyone know a ballpark estimate for a fix, Im sure the car isnt worth as much as the fix, but Id still like to know so i can tell her.  Also, any insight to how long she might have left with the car before it is completely fucked. This is the first dy she noticed it.

For the transmission itself, you're probably looking at upwards of $1000 for a decent replacement and the labor itself would be around $500, but that depends on the car as well. Keep in mind that it usually comes with a warranty of a few years/ ~30,000 miles.
