AHHHHHHHHH

Background: My MIS(management information systems) teacher is a fresh off the boat chinese instructor with a very thick accent. He doesn't really 'teach' anything, just lectures from the slides that he also posts online. So basically, 50% of the class doesn't show up.
Well exams were last week, and the class average was a 59%. I got a 74%. I'm like "sweet, I'm ahead of the curve". I don't show up the following class, I never do- it's a waste of time, as he just reads off the slides. He decided to randomly give 10 extra points to the people who showed up. So now, I'm pretty much running with the curve. He also said he will be doing occasional attendance, so now I have to show up to every godamn class, instead of using the time wisely and studying on my own.
"pop attendance"/"pop quizzes" are fucking gay. In the syllabus he didn't write anything about attendance being mandatory. I'm going to be pissed if I don't ace that class.

does he post the slides online?
if not, you hafta go to class.
if yes, then just study harder for the next test and get > 90% and you're set.
it's an unfortunate situation you're in and i sympathize. the cultural barrier really screws up any sense you could have of how to best allocate your time and effort.
if you don't figure out his hoops and jump through them you're not going to get the A.
it may not be worth it.

Yeah, usually I'm all for attendance, but he posts ALL the slides online, and his lectures consist of him repeating what are shown on the slides, and if he does elaborate(his elaborations are no better than the textbook). Therefore, it was a waste of my time, and now I'm running along the curve.
Yeah, gotta bust ass for the next test.

Upon further review of his syllabus, I stumbled upon this URL which is clearly printed on his syllabus.
http://www.csulb.edu/divisions/aa/grad_undergrad/senate/documents/policy/2001/01/
it clearly states "The syllabus must make clear whether any portion of the grade is based on attendance and/or participation" under the faculty guidelines on attendance/participation.
I wrote him an e-mail regarding this....hopefully I(and everyone else) get my bloody 10 points. Grrrrr.

I assume no1 really cares, but I'll post this anyways.
The professor just wrote me back: You are right. That's EXTRA credit that I will use when students are in special situation such as 5 points short from passing the class. The attendance shows the attitude that I will use in final grading.

Thats pretty messed up! I have a teacher this semester that is kind of the same way i think its bullshit to throw points around like that. You should be graded on your knowledge of the subject.

Eh, I'm always down for extra credit.
I was ready to take this issue to the school board, lulz. No way was I about to lose 5%(1% thus far) of my grade.
