Accurately Rehydrate Your Casing TIP
    #1113461 - 12/05/02 11:07 AM (21 years, 1 month ago)

Here's a tip that some might not be aware of...

After the first flush, there has been some debate on the amount of watering applied to the casing.

If 100 grams wet were harvested, one can estimate 92% of this 100 grams has been depleted from the casing, therefore 92 grams of water should be applied to maintain optimal water composition.

This won?t work.
What you forgot is that a considerable part of the moisture comes from the substrate itself and only a part from the casing.
If one was to do as you suggest, you would set your casing under water.

Once a casing layer has been added to substrate I refer to the complex as a/the "casing".

F8L-

After growing out a flush you have lost mass from the substrate. If you were to add back as much water as was present in the fruits you would end up with a higher percentage of water in your substrate than was originally present.

and the water in the air mostly comes from the casing layer....
in my experience, unless the casing layer is hardly colonised at all you can't reintroduce the amount of water that was lost from a flush without producing a saturated and/or overlain(overlayed?) casing.

I think the humidity in the air is such that the casing will not lose moisture to the air (equilibrium). I doubt if much of the humidity in the air is actually incorporated into the fruiting body of the fungi.

I have found that dunking a casing after the second or even third flush is most effective. dunking prior to that usually results in many very small mushrooms due to the extrememly high water content of the substrate. dunking with rye is much more effective because rye doesn't become as saturated as dung, or especially as much as a compost substrate. my compost seemed to absorb and retain more water after dunking than either other substrates.

Anyone tried the 'drinking straw tek' on casings?
I've seen good results with cakes, would it work with casings?
Just a thought

It sure will work. But you'll have to use alot more straws for even results.
