ahh! the green!
    #1088718 - 11/26/02 07:57 PM (21 years, 4 months ago)

ok, my casing was going well, and then it looked like the mycellium was "changing", but then i realized that it was a different type of growth that was taking over... which later turned green, and i then realized it was green mold that was taking over my casing.

so now the green mold covers the most part of the casing :frown:  and my question is this: is it possible to get rid of the mold? (remember, it covers almost the whole top of the casing), or should i just trash it, and start over?

Kill it! Kill it before it breeds!

Seriously, if you've got a casing that's overrun with the green, it's done for. Toss it before it royally contams your entire grow area.

if i were to dig a hole, and put it in the back yard like you said, do you think it would survive the winter?  (i live in canada mind you, so the winters can get pretty harsh

saying you decide to let this casing grow whatever shrooms it can rather than to just throw it away... would these shrooms be ok to eat provided the green mold was on the cake only and not on the shrooms themselves? Ive got the same problem... the cake is quickly being overcome by green mold... but there are a handful of shrooms that are starting to grow out of one corner of the cake. I'd at least like to be able to salvage these should they mature.

In my opinion, no. Remember, mycelium is a network of nutrient exchange. Regardless of the color on one side, contaminents can easily pass through the whole cake. Toss the bad cake before it infects anything else.

Let me ask another question then. Has anyone out there ever eaten shrooms that were possibly contaminated with this kind of "green mold" and did it make you sick or cause any negative effects?
