Giveaways and ratings...

I notice a lot of members are giving away prints to get trade ratings so they may access the Marketplace. However, it seems that just giving away prints (as noble as that is) really only entitles you to a good general rating. Trades require an exchange of items...trade rates are a special animal, and are the only way (in my opinion) to quantify the real long-term "trustworthyness" of a member.

I only mention this to remind people that they should ask something in return, however minimal, to make it a real trade. I appreciate every single member who gives away prints, materials, or even knowledge.

If I'm out of line on this, mods, please delete this. I just see this as a potential for problems in the ratings as we are asked when giving trade rates to be truthful and accurate in when posting them.

If trusworthy = trade rate
and free spores in the mail = foundation of trust

then why cant free spores = +5 trade rate?

dude if your trading for the simple fact to boost your rating how does that qualify you as "trustworthy" ??? I trade because I like to pitch and catch... just kidding I'm half drunk ... But for real do it for some other reason then that...

I guess I am just asking for the mods to decide whether giveaways qualify one to recieve a trade rate. If it is fine with the mods, then I am all for it. It just seems that with the number of people wanting access to the Marketplace that a clarification of this point would be in order...

I know some will disagree with my original post, and that's cool...I just feel it needs to be clarified to allow a more honest and reliable trade rate posting.

I disagree too.  A trade rating shows they are good for their word, sends things out fast, and send out what they say they would.  Pretty much showing you can trust the person that they will send what they told you and fast.

I think you get that in both full trades and giveaways.  IMO, you are almost promoting selfishness, in where you should not do something unless you get something back.  So I disagree

Agree that you are trading a free print for nothing, and that's a trade.
But it should be a good print to get a good rating. I've had to stop taking part in trading with newbies for this reason- they all want +5:mushroom2: for the crappiest little print with no effort or art behind it.

well a giveaway shouldnt really come with a hook "bump my rating" that kinda makes is selfish anyways, let people give you +5 on their own accord instead of demanding it for the spores...? maybe?

could make a simple rule, no using Rating as a catch for a giveaway or contests... that way your forced to actualy give it away instead of pulling rating out of it....

I agree 100%!  It will have to be a good print before I give a good rating. 

But thats why there is 1-5.  give rating of 3 for good fast shipping and it being a print, but take off two for a shit print, and vise virsa.

No, I'm not promoting anything, I just think a clarification would be in order. I would be more than happy to give trade rates for giveaways. If the mods allow for it then let's make it clear...I would be giving more good trade rates in that case. When I recieve a freebie, I give a 5 shroom general rating. If the generous member should receive a trade rate, then I should be modifying those general rates to make them trade rates.

This was not meant to stir up the populace...I have given away tons of stuff but do not expect any rates. I do think that if it is allowable to give a trade rate for giveaways that I owe a bunch of people a correction in their rates. I want to be able to give due credit to those that make contributions.

I just ask for the mods to say if it is OK to give a trade rate for a giveaway, I'm not knocking those that want the rating.

That's true but giving a 3-shroom rating would be more traumatic than not giving one, I think.

Agreed on the basic point- if it's a giveaway, then it's ok in Mush Cult. But if you ask for something in return, it's a trade and belongs in teh Marketplace.
Recipients are of course free to give ratings without being asked.

Sorry to have touched off such a furor...unless a mod rules otherwise, the consensus seems to be that giveaways qualify for a trade rate. In that case, I will go with that concept. I owe a few of you trade rates instead of the generals I have given. If I owe you one, PM me and I will try to make it right with you.

You gotta get ur trade rate up somehow right?

If its really that important then there needs to be a way for people currently without it or with low amounts of it to get it, ie giveaway.

I still dont think it should be required of somone in a giveaway, maybe inferred... but not required.

i am pretty sure alot of the people that give giveaways here at the shroomery are big hearted and generous.
your point is invalid because they could get trade ratings by trading and most of the people that give to the community already have excellent trade ratings.

Trading is done with people who have things to trade, if you GIVE to the noobs, you should be rewarded... a trade rating would help further your progress with older members... I personaly upped general ratings as I didnt know what the trade rating was for...

This is true.  Before I was here one month I did a giveaway.  and have done several since.  I would not have a trade rating without doing a giveaway infact had ppl not want to trade with me because I didn't have a rating.  I understand not wanting to trade with someone who doesn't have a rating.  At the same ppoint I give everyone I see doing a giveaway a 5 general rating.  This is because I like to see ppl giving back to the community.  If I partake in the giveaway when I receive the print I give a trade rating.  I agree with doc about giving a 3 shroom rating I would rather not get a rating thean a three shroom rating.  I dont think you owe anyone anything.  I think that if you want to give a trade rating then go ahead.

When I did my give away.. I got mostly general ratings.. that's cool, or if you give it a trade rating that's cool.. or if you give no rating.. that's cool too. Some people need that bump to get going on here.. I don't see the harm. Though on the real side of it, I do think a trade (as I am sure it is defined) has not really taken place. Perhaps as Chasawah stated, it should be made as a polite request, not really a requirement. Either way.. doesn't bug me.

I see what you mean about how you would rather receive no rating.  But what if it is a full trade from both ends, you sned yours right away, you wait 3months for yours, and what you got was a half print. What would you do there? no rating, or a 0trade rate? :shrug:

It seems, then, that giveaways are indeed trades...quid pro quo (freebie for a rate). I have supplies and prints that I would be happy to pass along to allow a new member to qualify. Would posting these  items in Mushroom cultivation be a benefit to those who have no access to the Marketplace? I'll try it and see how it flies...

I think that hmmmmmmmm what would I do hmmmmm give a five still but state the circumstances in the comment box.  I did receive something.  I guess I am just to nice.  I don't really give bad ratings I would rather not rate someone than give them a bad rating.  I am not saying I haven't given bad ratings, but there are extreme circumstances that cause me to look i didnt give chas a bad rating even after he gave me one.  I still gave him a good ratng.  Which is stupid but whatever thats the sort of person I am I guess.

it's been my understanding that trade ratings are for any time goods/services change hands. trade ratings show how well a person performs when sending said goods/services. general ratings are more personality based. a "trade" doesn't HAVE to be two people sending things. trade ratings should be used (IMHO)any time goods/services are exchanged.

I have seen plenty of "to newbies only" giveaways on here. I see the justification.. I think there was one yesterday. This is a cool community, while the system is set up to keep the quacks out of important dealings, there is much to be said for spreading the knowledge and ability (including supplies) to those interested. You may be helping the next ground breaker in this field get his start, or letting someone find out that he/she just isn't cut out for it.

That's what I do.. and hell, I have made people wait an extra few days before, and I have waited.. so, whatever, things don't always work out as planned.. bomb me or just move on it's all good. But, it would take a lot for me to bomb someone on trade ratings.
