Yeah, and it's all because of the damn flu vaccine! Goddamn hippies.

The solution is easy though: stop diagnosing autism and we're back in the 1930s when autism was extremely rare and even less well understood than today.

That's what you get for putting lil'bits of gay rock stars into the bloodstream of our young ones.

Btw, 1 in 91, so how many autists should we have here on the Shroomery then? Better not change the site layout too often...

vast majority of children will almost certainly display some sort of autistic tendancy at some stage during their childhood.

most people grow out of it during early adulthood too.

That's the whole problem, now isn't it? The rest is speculation.

I'm not saying it's overdiagnosis. It's also very well possible that in the past, it was underdiagnosed structurally. However, I think that the number of diagnoses reflects the fact that in today's society, it's very difficult to function 'properly' if you deviate ever so slightly from the 'norm'. Hence, people run into problems, and the medical profession takes its responsibility and attaches a nice label to these people. Why do you think we conjured up 'diagnoses' such as PDD-NOS? Back in the old days, we'd have just said 'leave the bugger alone, he's just difficult to reason with'. Nowadays, we for some reason need to put some pseudo-scientific name to it. Really, I don't think mankind hasn't changed that much over the past 70 years or so. I do think that the ways we interact and the demands of our society have changed, leading to this phenomenon. The problem is, such reasoning is not apparent from statistics alone.

I have a minor form of autism and I can think of at least 5 other members who do also.

There are probably plenty more who are undiagnosed.
Autism is not a disease; it is a unique set of special abilities that come with their own problems.

Where I was born and under the circumstances I wouldn't be 100% surprised if it was caused by heavy metal poisoning.

man

its not a real "disease" it has no real cause. imo, everyone has autistic tendencies that they display at one point or another.

some psycs. might diagnose you, and some wont.

For some people, this is true, I think.

However, don't forget the (small) group of people who are severely autistic. Note that I was not referring to them, in my previous post. I do think that the 'in-betweens', or those with mild forms of autism, are more likely to be diagnosed today than they would be, say, 50 years ago. There are many reasons for that, starting with the phenomenon I described above, but also including better population-wide awareness of mental 'disorders' and perhaps also changes in the protocols used for diagnosing such disorders (e.g. DSM).

Many people who are mildly autistic are able to hide it well enough in public that most would never notice; or just think they are slightly awkward for other reasons.

The thing about the ever so popular statistic the other member brought up is that it includes anyone on the autistic spectrum; not just the severe.

i shouldve mentioned that, yeah, some people are severeley affected.

infact ive known someone like this almost my whole life, and SLOWLY little by little, he has quite simply become more and more normal everyday. if you met him, you probably wouldnt suspect a thing.

bill gates had it. its speculated einstein had it, and i think kurt cobain definitely had some form of it, but thats what made him who he was.

Yes, and I think that that statistic, or rather progression, is skewed. Today, some of the 'slightly awkwards' are diagnosed with autism, and their number, I believe, is still increasing. While in the past, those people were just as you said: slightly awkward. And therefore not included in this set of statistics, which potentially leads to an apparent increase of incidences, while in fact that increase may be explained to a large extent by the way we record (and didn't/don't record) data and the dynamics that influence the process of diagnosis. I think these effects explain the apparent increase to a very large extent indeed.

And besides, if it's all down to heavy metal poisoning, how come we don't see a drastic decrease in autism diagnoses since the 1980s when we drastically cleaned up our industrial act? Not to say it's completely clean nowadays, but especially in terms of heavy metals, we did manage to make considerable progress.

I'm not saying that there is no relationship between heavy metals ingestion and autism. I just don't know. But I do know that this supposed trend is overrated by those who fail to include other plausible mechanisms into their reasoning.
