Black mold on harvested fruits
    #11186442 - 10/05/09 11:47 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Ok, so last friday my friend from another state harvested some gorgeous looking fruits from his black kow with a coir and vermiculite casing. There were no problems with the actual casing and this was his second flush. Well he did not have time to dry all of them before he went on vacation so he just took them with him. Put them all in a grocery bag and left.
The problem now is that after his two day vacation, he had left the bag in his car, about five of the harvested mushies have what appears to be black mold on them. And one had cobweb mold on it. I told him that the cobweb mold one would be fine once it dries and he could take it (which im not sure is completely accurate) but that i was unsure of whether or not he could ingest the ones with the black mold on them. After searching the forums I could not find any threads that said whether or not he could take them.

Sooo, could anyone confirm or deny whether it is safe to take the ones with the black mold on them (or the cobweb mold for that matter)??

If there is another post relating to this please tell me, or just give me any info you might have on the situation.

as far as I know black mold is toxic, if indeed that is what is on that, I would stay the hell away from it.

never put fresh mushrooms in plastic bags or in the freezer. Sounds like he may have done all the work for nothing, when he could have just ran a small fan over top of them for two days :frown:

i, personally, would not risk it. when in doubt, toss it out. it's much better than a trip to the hospital.

Im positive it is not spores. I do not have a camera and neither does he but the spores that were dropped onto the stems gave somewhat of a purplish hue. This shit was black, like it made my fingers black. Its just like extremely slimy but yet kinda mushy. I know its not spores from experience but im not sure whether or not it is indeed black mold. But im guessing if its not good for you I will just tell him not to take those or some shit. oh well. good thing it was only on a few.

its rot.  bacteria are eating it.  cut the caps (or whatever part has it on it) off and the rest will be fine to eat.:sun:  next time dry them or eat soon after harvest.:stoned:

Would you eat anything else that has mold growing on it? No offense, but use your common sense.

None taken, i was not suggesting that i was actually going to ingest anything with mold on it ( and actually i would bc i love blue cheese lol) but i was just wondering whether or not there were severe health risks related to eating this shit.

If it is indeed black mold, don't do it.

If it is rot, do what 13shrooms suggested. You could also saute them in a pan and that would kill the bacteria.

Well its not really me its the guy who grew them, he just i guess doesnt want to waste any. Do you think that if he put them in a coffee maker like he was making coffee that it would be hot enough to kill the bacteria? I told him no but i wasnt sure. and again it is not spores.

yeah the heat could kill the bacteria but it is highly unlikely it would destroy the toxins left behind from the bacteria.
