How should you prepare the ground for poppies?

I want to plant them over my mushroom patch, so can I just throw them over the colonised woodchips then cover them with a layer of dirt and water? How often do I need to water the seedlings?

Hmmm. Planting directly over a mushroom patch doesn't seem like a good idea.  Likely the mycelia will just treat your seeds as substrate and devour them before they can germinate. Also, plants will have trouble setting roots and competing for nutrients in a bed of straight colonized wood chips.

I think a better idea might be to plant them around the mushroom patch. Then they get the potassium and phosphorous the mushrooms are releasing from the woodchips, and possibly some opportunistic mycorhizzal associations, without the risk of rotting seeds/seedlings and competing directly with the mushrooms.  I grew coleus and clover around a King Stropharia bed this year, and they did fantastic, without any additional fertilizer.  Mushrooms are definitely an exciting addition to companion gardening, but you have to give them some room.

There is soil underneath the woodchips, The chips are only about 2 inches deep. Im hoping to plant to poppies there cause it will help retain humidity in there and help them fruit.

I already did it. I layed some shredded redwood and potting soil over the patch and some seeds and then some potting soil and I watered.

The seeds I layed there before already sprouted and where growing I just wanted to beef up the plant content a little.

Does anyone haqve any experience using cow manure compost as fertilizer?
