*First time grow* might have a problem
    #11191103 - 10/06/09 01:36 AM (8 years, 10 months ago)

This is my very first grow and up to this point i have been doing a good job using the pf tek, having all 12 of my jars clear of contamination.

These past few days they haven't been growing though. They are around 75% colonization with the bottom completely colonized, and the upper edges thinly covered in mycelium. Perhaps it is dried out? although there are small water droplets on the inside of the glass.

Also I heard that you can just flip it upside down to get it going at the top? Only problem being is that there is a only a loose layer of verm above each cake, and flipping them might send some verm out the innoc. holes.

I have 4 needle size hole with out any type of filter.
Any suggestions?
temp is around 72

How many days total?  And how many days total since they have appeared to have stopped?

They could be consolidating themselves; they could have hit spots of overly compact substrate, etc...

The Verm layer if at least 1/2" is a good enough contam barrier.  I use a bit more when doing BRF cakes, but that’s just my preference.

But no matter what, everything sounds good so far.

suggested temp is anywhere from 75 to 81 degrees. i imagine that your grow has slowed down due to it not being within the recommended range for optimal colonization.

try to be careful and flip them.  It has worked for me very well when what you describes happens.  yes some verm might fall out just be careful.

I just flipped them so ill give it a few days and see how they have progressed. Also, i have noticed small parts of verm falling down the sides of the jar, and the mycelium having a hard time covering all of them. could this cause a problem, or just another reason for growing slow?

Your substrate is shrinking away from the sides of the jar, allowing the dry verm to fall down the sides. This verm is non-nutritious and dry and does not colonize very easily. Not really that big of a problem.
