No, it is illegal, however it is largely unenforced. Because they have a traditional use as 'decorations' its pretty easy to get away with growing a small amount. A field is a lot more risky.

A field will get noticed. Some well placed (as in decorative looking) plants will not get noticed unless there is another reason to be looking.
Be very wary of how you're going to harvest, it not very normal looking to go out and "scratch" a pretty looking flower. haha

no, it is legal. it becomes illegal when you are growing poppies to produce opium. the poppy is the state flower of california.
you're right tho a field is a really bad idea. it would be hard to justify growing that many for any other use..

Papavar Somniferum opium producing poppies are not legal whatsoever. The California poppy does not contain opium.

no.. it is illegal, it's like claiming you're growing weed for ornamental purposes... an old woman in arkansas was jailed for poppies growing by her mailbox, her daughter sent her the seeds, she had no idea
the california poppy produces no opium

As others have said...
"In the United States, opium is listed as a Schedule II controlled substance by the Drug Enforcement Administration. In addition, "Opium poppy and poppy straw" are also prohibited.[4] However, this is not typically enforced for poppies grown or sold for ornamental or food purposes."
The plant is illegal under US law.

the seeds are clearly legal though right? i don't see how you couldn't just plead negligence if you had them growing with a few different types of flower.

In all likelihood you would probably get away with that, but it's still a liability.
I wouldn't do it, if I was growing some I'd find a secluded place.
