i got a positive ID on these from Petersons field guide, however it says, "this is a very variable species frequently confused with oudemansiella longpipes...." i does say deeproot is edible but nothing more about taste or any pics or info on the longpipes variant. although there are no simmilar pics in the book, the plates are drawings not photos (hate it).
has anyone tasted these? comments / cooking suggestions?

Habitat: southern, coastal VA, soil under deciduous and conifers in woods
Gills: very white, well spaced, mostly notched
Stem: 6-8" long (additional 3-6" below ground like a root) thin, brown, hollow.
Cap: 1.5 - 3", brown/beige, smooth and moist, flat with nipple
Spore print color: white
BTW, yesterday's hike was a windfall

Now known as Xerula radicata, edible and medicinal! This mushroom inhibits certain enzymes that in turn can lower blood pressure. inski..

I'm sorry, I have no tips on preparation but I wouldn't eat them without cooking them in some way, maybe someone else has experience eating this mushroom. I am very interested in the antihypertensive properties of this mushroom! inski.

I suffer from hypertension so I am interested in the medicinal properties, I have found that mushroom in New Zealand but have only recently learnt of the medicinal properties, next season I will attempt to cultivate it! inski..

i'm thinking of trying it on some compost from my pile outside, lawncuttings mostly with leaves and twigs from maple & black walnut and a little fruit and veg from kitchen occasionally. bottom of the pile should be great by now. do you think they like wood, peterson's says, "....on soil from deciduous trees, possibly from dead roots...." but mosst of the pics i found googling it showed it growing in a grass field or lawn.
if you don't find any after a while, i'd be willing to send you a print ( if sending spores to new zealand is legal of course )

Thanks, I'll keep your offer in mind but I'm sure I can find this mushroom again! Here is a link that might be helpful, it involves using supplemented hay! http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/2979082 inski.
