too cold a cold shock?
    #1118741 - 12/07/02 12:20 AM (14 years, 38 minutes ago)

I have a brf cased in just verm and was wondering if cold shocking it in temps range from -2C to 3C would kill the mycelium. would it be better to cold shock it in those temps or wait another day to cold shock it at a warmer temp (fridge isn't an option right now).

dont cold shock for less than 0C or 32F as when water freezes the water molecules inside the mycellium should start to crystalize and expand which will not be a good thing for the mycellium. so just wait till its +0C or +32F. then cold shock it for about 8-12 hours in fridge is what i do and works wonders.

Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded.

so temps of 1C or 2C (33.5F - 36F) is fine for the mycelium then?

That seems too cold but as long as they don't freeze...

Why do you have to have them that cold? You really only need to drop the temp 10 degrees from the vegitative state for most shrooms....

I can't put them in the fidge and I was thinking of putting a blanket over my window creating a mini fridge between the glass and the blanket (it's cold outside where I live) but I don't want people walking by and seeing it. So I was going to just put it in the cellar.

Well you have no mushrooms on the casing yet so cold-shocking will be applied to the mycelium.
Mycelium can take lower temperatures without any real stress.

One time I cold shocked in a bowl and left it over night, it was so cold there was a ring of ice around the bowl when I checked up on it in the morning.. It survived and flushed.
