First grow, BRF cakes in PMP -- not enough FAE? *picture*
    #11187006 - 10/05/09 03:13 PM (8 years, 2 months ago)

This is my first grow from cakes.  PF tek.  I've dunked and rolled.

This is also my first try at the "poor man's pod".

Temperature is ~ 23 C / 73 F, and RH is 95% - 100%.

As you can see from the picture, the cakes are growing a lot of mycelium above the layer of vermiculite.

Also, the mushroom growth looks a little crippled to me.

I've only fanned manually a few times.

I've got five holes (aprox 0.5 cm in diameter) on the top lid for air exhaust.  Should I try more holes?

Fan more?

I'm contemplating mounting a computer fan to the pod, and have it run on a timer.  What do you guys think about this?

Thanks a lot!

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

Lighting is just a normal room lamp, 60W bulb, situated in the roof just above the pod.

I've been putting off getting a "dedicated" lamp for the pod.

Yeah look up "color temperature" in the forum. Your bulb probably sucks for growing cubes.

Most lights will do the same thing - give light off. incandescent  compared to flourescent bulbs really will have no noticable changes in your mushies. You will find that UV flourescent bulbs can have a bit of change in pinning and growth time, but you don't have that worry.  You should mount a computer fan in there and have it run 24/7 (no such thing as too much fresh air as long as your humidity stays high). I am currently doing a shotgun terrarium with a laptop fan hooked up to a 5.9 volt cell phone charger that runs constantly and I have big fat cubensis sprouting up right now.
Overall your mushrooms do not look bad, they could just use a few more fresh gulps of oxygen.

or maybe even sit them close to a window so that they can get more natural light, that helps them a little.

I run a PMP. Just had 3 excellent flushes.

I have 2 tiny holes in the top of the lid.

What kind of pump are you using? Is the pump above the container?

Are you using bubble wands? I use two.

I also use a few inches of geolite then a few inches of perlite.

I mist daily to help bring out more pins. I run my pump 24/7.

you dont need light, i have never used light for brf cakes and have always had great results.  you should use a shotgun terrarium, it looks like your getting to much humidity and not quite enough air exchange.  this is just a recommendation:  make a shotgun fruiting chamber, get a small fan and an automatic programming unit, just program it to go on every 4 hours for 5 minutes, and point it in the general direction of the botoom of the fruiting chamber, the reason for the aiming the air at the bottom is that the air will be drawn up through the perlite and be cooler than the rest of the surrounding air making it more humid.  thats what i was told a long time ago and since ive done it i never have to fan it or even check up on it until i want to.  its always a good idea to mist it as well.  and if your creative, then you can also rig up a frog mister to go on after the air has been exchanged via automated fan. but these are just simple suggestions that have worked well for me, good luck

If its the fuzzy myc, its prob the FAE. I used to got scared to first 2 batches i had produced that white fuzzy mycelium, because i thought it was cobweb or something, but after time i realised my fae wasnt good enough, and that was the reason i was getting that.

Thanks for the feedback and insight.  I'll mount a computer fan tomorrow, and keep it running for a while.  Will post back with updates.

Aren't you running an air pump?

A fan is a 100% waste of time in a proper PMP.

My aquarium pump moves 160 L/h, or 42 gallons of air per hour.  The pump is placed on the floor next to the container.

I have two bubble wands connected to the pump.  Running 24/7.

No perlite though, only geolite.

I let mine get natural light.

Have you been hand misting them on occasion?

Yup, I've hand misted a few times, maybe once every other day.

It looks like not enough FAE to me. Your mushrooms are long and skinny.
