Maybe a Psathyrella species.  Not active.

Panaeolus for sure. Unusual habitat, but maybe there is some manure in the mulch. Need a spore print, but it could well be Panaeolus cinctulus.

I said maybe.  The habitat didn't seem right for Pans.  The stems still don't seem right for Pans to me.  They look fragile as hell.  If they are subbs, I'll eat my shorts.

if most of those stems made it to his house in somewhat good condition they definitely arent Psathyrella, that stem would be mooshy or stringy all the way up to the cap by now.

They're edible, but not very tasty and most likely not (or barely) active.

google Panaeolus cinctulus, or Panaeolus subbalteatus, and Panaeolus papilionaceus, and take some spore prints on white paper and foil

also, go back and get more pics of them fruiting fresh.

the stem color reminds me of Panaeolus papilionaceus.

The gill color is too dark for foes IMO.

Habitat looks wrong for pan. foes; I only find them in grass.

Good call. The brownish golden cap color suggests that.
