Need some help IDing Fungus
    #11186334 - 10/05/09 01:31 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

hello. I recently found a bunch of neat mushrooms, unfortunately I dont know the names of any of them and would like to know the names of them.  Thought you guys would enjoy viewing the pics as well.
These were all found in Southern Illinois, in swampy flood ground.  Pics were taken right after a storm.

#1some sort of poly pore? Artist conk?

#2This group of fungi was growing on a rotting log that fell off of a tree stump.

#2 Not sure if the mushroom broken by the leaf is a different sp. then the white ball looking ones

#3found these two guys growing on a broken tree branch about 7 feet in the air

#3? Two little guys that i believe to be the same species as the two above

#4 Auricularia auricula.  Now these babies were real neat looking.  They actually felt like velvet material when you rubbed them.  Growing on a fallen down tree branch.  I went back the next day and these things were about half the size in the pic and lost alot of the neat purple color.

underneath fungi

#5 Now these things sprung out at my eye when I first saw them.  My first thought was that someone stuck bubblegum on this log.

#6 Old man of the woods mushy

Now some Randoms taken a different day on a 5mgp camera
Random #1

Hypholoma Fasciculare

Thanks for any information

happy hunting!

hmm possibly

the ones in my pick are about the size of a quarter and lime green.  Do you think they are a very young laetiporus?

1.  Polyporaceae species, I'm not too good on Polypores
2.  The spherical ones are a Lycoperdon species, and the other is probably a Pluteus
3.  Possibly Hypsizygus species
4.  Auricularia auricula
5.  ?
6.  Strobilomyces floccopus
7.  Hypholoma.  Probably H. fasiculare

#1 polypore- yeah, looks like artist's conk, but the third photo looks like Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor): what kind of wood was it growing on? It's not laetiporus.
#2 (lycoperdon) puffball; edible when young; not distinctive taste; smells a bit like latex when cut
#3 the mushroom by the leaf is different than the puffballs. Not sure by the pictures what it is.
#4 ? hmm. looking into it.
#5 Auricularia Judae it's good to eat
#6 "Big Scary Mushy" is an old, old man of the woods. Strobilomyces floccopus

Random
#1 ?
#2 Hypholoma Fasciculare (poisonous sulfur tuft)

I advise any noob looking to identify mushrooms to fill out the ID form and provide clear photographs. Knowledge is a privilege and deserves respect. Let's give due props to the experts!

thanks alot guys.  I always knew morels were not the only edible fungus that grows around here.  There is lot of Auricularia Judae around here.  heck yeah

I am not sure what kind of tree the poly pores are growing on.  It was an enormous tree covered in lots of moss.  I can go back to the tree to see if i can tell.  The polypore in pic #3 was the only one not covered in leafs and was about 8-10 inches wide.  Turkey tails are small and grow in clusters right?

any idea on how to go about cooking the Judae and Puff balls?

also the leaf broken mushroom may be a Pluteus?  thats active eh?
