Unknown species growing, first grow
    #11186023 - 10/05/09 12:27 PM (8 years, 2 months ago)

So today I went and looked at the grow, expecting to find normally developing Cubes. Well, I was in for a surprise.

The mushroom is currently about 5cm/2in high, has a universal veil, white stem with a hint of yellow and a cap that is gray at the base and yellow at the tip. You can see the veil still sitting on the cap.

The whole story goes like this. I started with a spore print of (presumably) Psilocybe Cubensis Australian that I got from the FSRE. I made a liquid culture with the spores, then innoc'd two one pint jars of WBS. I then used the WBS to inoculate pasteurized h/poo, weathered and dried beforehand. I admit I've seen some pretty similar mushrooms growing frome the h/poo after being left out in the rain accidentally. But I guess that isn't a factor since it was pasteurized in 160F water, with a meat thermometer stuck in the middle to monitor the temperature.

Everyone's advice is welcome.

Looks like an Ink Cap that got through your pasteurization process.

My first attempt at growing cubes ended in the same result! Ha Ha, that's cool. (I know it wasn't what you wanted, but those shaggy manes are tasty when young). Wait till you see the "melted" pool of ick when she drops her spores!

i don't think i would eat it under any circumstances. it definitely looks like something may have gone wrong during pasteurization that allowed another strain's spores to remain active in your sub. it definitely doesn't look like a cube (or anything else i would recommend eating for that matter). might be best to toss the sub and start again. just my 2 cents.

Bummer.
I won't toss them out just yet. Maybe they're shrooms in disguise.

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

it almost looks like a young yellow amanita I stumbled upon in the forest, but the cap is too open & the stem is too long. Be careful!

Personally I doubt it's an ink cap. That white stuff on the cap is the veil , not the cap. I think it's a universal veil, the whole mushroom was in it, then it broke to reveal the cap and stem). The cap is kind of grayish near the bottom and smooth, looks wet...
Maybe I'll go snap a better picture. This one's kinda out of focus, and the battery died before I got a chance to take another.
