Mysticism & the Paranormal
    #11185738 - 10/05/09 11:20 AM (8 years, 1 month ago)

I'm curious. This forum is designed for debate. To debate effectively one needs evidence that can be shared between posters.

There's a few folk who post here often and never provide reliable or any evidence of their beliefs. Why do you think they persist here when there is a forum designed just for them? (Mysticism & the Paranormal).

I'm really curious.

Sometimes I wonder if they are proselytizing?

It takes a mature mind to know the definition of philosophy. Some people want their beliefs to be true so bad, they will dredge them in philosophy and deep fry them in a heated debate of psychology.

Well I agree. So why do you think they need agreement from others?

They feel their arguments are elevated to a more serious status when posting here.  It is similar to Creationists who label their ideas science.  This brings an air of legitimacy to their beliefs.

Humans inherintley stick to their kind. Whether it be by social status or belief system. It's a form of affirmation that gives them the delusion that their beliefs hold water. The more believers unite, the more their beliefs become real to them.

But does it when they continually hem and hedge and refuse to answer direct queries and ignore requests for evidence?

To me that makes them look either ignorant, terrified, fraudulent, comicial.

Youre off topic so I can guess where you stand in all this. It's a common "debate" tactic by those on the defense.

However I will answer. They are being vindictive or mean spirited. I've done it a few times.

If you knew you shared an askew (but of course to you it would simply be reality)  view of reality completely unsupported by anything but your own "feeling", would you not then try and find more like your self or, if there are none, create(recruit) more?
Such is the Modus Operandi of any meme. They are filled with the thought that they are bringing people closer to enlightenment of some kind. There are no limits. They will look for more recruits anywhere, especially ones that others might view as legitimate people

As for sources on this information... there are far too many but the best three I know of are, by far, Daniel C. Dennett and Howard K. Bloom. Richard Dawkins has a great deal of valid(usually)thoughts on memes in general and specifically religious ones. Susan Blackmoore is another great thinker on the subject of memes and, I'm pretty certain, has pioneered the meme of temes(think technological memes).

"Is God willing to prevent evil but not able? Then he is not omnipotent...
Is he able but not willing? Then he is malevolent...
Is he both able, and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him god." Epicurus c. 300 BCE

"When I brought up the fact that 'No drug is good or bad, they're all just A drug, what someone does with them determines the postive or negative outcome. Look at medicine, those are drugs' Reponse was that 'well medicine solves problems' well so does LSD." -Learningtofly

My point was more that uninformed people will always be ignorant of the rules.
I meant to answer a question with a question; not to defend those who come into P&S not expecting a debate.

I certainly agree with you, however in Mysticism & the Paranormal there is a group ready and willing to agree with almost anything presented.

perhaps I should perform a test with my proposed scenario in the other thread.

I will put this in m and p and see what comes of it

Sure.  They are trying to convert or recruit others to their way of thinking.  I guess it can be argued that we are trying to convince others to our way of thinking too when engaging in debates in public forums.  Damn it, we are no better than them!

Oh but there is a difference and it's important to this thread. we are here to debate our beliefs and present proofs that can be examined. If those proofs cannot be replicated by most then our position falls.

What I mean is, no matter how big a piece of the pie they get, they will always be looking for more... even if it gets them killed(or in this case banned?).
A piece of pie would be equal to a distinct forum in this context.

This ties in directly with my ideas on death anxiety.
