Can I heat the soil in the owen too much?

Hi! I have a newbie question:
I am about to sterelize the soil that I am to use for casing, I have read that I should put it in the oven wrapped in aluminium foil for about one hour in 200 degress celcius.
My question is, can it "damage" the soil if I use to much heat (like 250 degrees) or let the soil be in the oven for too long (like two hours)?

soil for a casing layer???
casing layers are usually 50/50+. Peat/verm/lime/gypsum. Not potting soil.
Also casing layers, aswell as bulk substrates should be pasturised not sterilised. And the oven is a poor method.
look up pasturisation, you want to pasturise your casing mix in jars in a pot of water. Mantain a core temp of between 140-160f for 1 hour
www.mushroomvideos.com has a video showing how

"potting soil" Some kinds have been used. Miracle Gro Moisture Control has worked well for some people. Also there's Jiffy Mix Seed Starter. But most people use peat, verm, lime.

One guy here in holland used soil (in dutch: Zaai en stekgrond) speccialy for sprouting seeds (which should be the same as the above mentioned Jiffy Mix Seed Starter). He had great results with it when casing a bulk straw with it and his smaller rye cases.
So yes, it is posible to use soil as a casing.
The oven is mostly used as a tool for pre-sterilization, only as an extra step to make sure its done properly. I think you could do it, and then still pasteurize it like you normally would. More heat; less contams

oven works just fine..besides its the cleanest , simplest and fastest way to pasteurize, never ever had one single contam so i dont know why everyone dreads this method soo much.

i found tropical soil mix works great and fast, but when it says verm and perlite in the bag, dont count on it you gotta add your own verm cuz their isnt nearly enough.

Soil mixes were popular 20 to 30 years ago in casing layers. However, you will have a higher rate of contamination then a plain peat/verm casing that has been buffered with lime, and had gypsum added. It all depends on the species you're wanting to grow. Many don't require or benefit from a casing layer.
You 'can' pasteurize in the oven, but it will take much longer. Put a meat thermometer into the substrate and keep it between 140F and 160F (60C to 70C) for one hour at the center. Water is a much better heat transfer media than air, so it's generally faster to use hot water pasteurization. RR
