Ive been looking into this recently as found a large amount of phragmites australis growing wild locally.
From what Ive read up on it canary seed ( a phalaris aquatica cultivar)when growing new shoots has had very positive reports. I think the main issue is the undesirable amounts of Gramine, 5-OH-DMT But it has also had reports of significant amounts of DMT both phragmites australis and phaslaris arundinacea are listed as ayahusca analogs in @plants of the gods' due to their DMT content.
But Online reports are mixed at best so I dunno, Since I have so much to hand Its something I hope to look into further.

I'll try to post a photo of my Phalaris Arundinacea; bought some from a local nursery around 1 month or so back & just stuck it in a shallow pot with well drained soil...needless to say it's HUGE now.

The varigated P. arundinacea I came across was useless BTW.
I believe you ahve to get special varieties or get lucky to get good grass.

From what Ive read its only new growth that has any amounts of DMT, either new from seed or new growth after being cut down.

SWIM's growing some Brachystachys, it's doing pretty well and he'll have enough to extract from pretty soon.
-------------------- I've got some Phalaris Brachystachys and Desmanthus Illinoensis seeds to trade for a spore print or syringe.

Have been accumulating specific species, strains, and hybrids of phalaris seed for a few months now. I do not think it's very smart to go out collecting these even if you think you know the species just to avoid the possibility of the potentially fatal gramine. Rather, spend some time acquiring quality seeds from researchers and botanists to be sure you are getting the right stuff.
It's super easy to grow and if grown right can make a great border accent around the landscape or act as a fence between some plants or areas you want to be avoided by pets or other plants.

I've heard that one plant can produce at least three genetic varieties of seed. So, plugs are used.
But, I have also read good endorsements of random, ornamental varieties, grown from seed and put through a juicer.

I would like to read more about known examples of gramine poisoning, which occurred as a result of making extracts.
