    #11184093 - 10/04/09 10:53 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

I stumbled upon these Morel like fungi on the weekend while down the coast and would love if someone could help out with an ID.

A Copperhead I almost stood on nearby.

Habitat:
Coastal area Victoria Australia. Growing from moss covered sandy soil.

Stem:
Hollow. Quite brittle

Cap:
Hollow.

Bruising:
No bruising

Other information:
Can not describe the smell. Not mushroomy though.

Cheers.

Sweet find shroomeup! I've been on the look out for some of those in some of the burnt out areas out my ways, as Morchella are supposed to like that environment, but no luck as of yet. Copperheads FTL

Thanks mate, semilibera looks about right. These were older specimens so that would explain the darker colour than usual.
Dont worry I'm on lookout after that close call. I didnt see the snake untill the last second then my dog following walked right over it without even seeing him. Very Dodgy.

Yeah ive checked out a few of the burnt areas out my way with no luck also. I here it can take a 2-3 years after the fires before they appear. Amazing to see all the new regrowth anyway.

Looks more like a Cottonmouth than a copperhead (the lack of pattern) but I'm not from those parts so I don't know.  Good news is they aren't considered a Deadly snake, (if it's a copperhead) despite being a pit viper.

That is definitely an Australian copperhead snake (Austrelaps superbus) and you will die if bitten and left untreated.

It's not the fang size that kills but the neurotoxins in the venom.

A park ranger once told me that snakes are not really deadly for healthy people, just make you badly ill.  Can't remember if he said that was only if treatment is available...and have not verified his claim...

lol yea man, copperheads are bad...i go fishing for them with small brem behind a dam, and take pics and videos of close-ups with them.  If you get bitten by a copperhead, concentrate on keeping ur heart-rate down as much as possible/dont run. yell for help and try to walk. The toxins take a while to kill you, but will make you very sick very fast.  Anti-toxins are very common with copperheads, so no problem with treating you. And actually, i know a person who was bit by one, and didnt get anti-toxins, and lived. He eventualy did go to the doctor because his leg turned purple with infection.  But as far as snake toxins go, he was ok. (baby snakes are more venomous than full grown)
