by the way going bulk isnt doing a casing, you either case a fuck load of spawn ( thus a casing ) or you spawn it to shit or coir as it may please you, bulk is getting more out of what you already have and you dont need a casing for bulk, oops i aint a TC so what the fuck am I talking about anyway!!!

go with trays for either bulk or casing and find yourself a martha closet, but then again your fingers need to fiddle around those little projects so make your own closet.

pretty sure your friends will find you more -cool- when they see 10 times more shrooms growing out of a closet instead of purtty little ones from a fish tank, let me guess your gonna put cute blue computer neons in there to?

No, you don't, and it's rather arrogant to not only request this special treatment from the outset but title your thread as such. Your thread has as much of a right to being addressed by a TC as any other, that is to say none at all.

I really need some serious feedback on this issue from someone who really knows there shit, because I'm about to waste a bunch of time and money

I want to make a terrarium that has all of the same principles as a shotgun terrarium, but is studier, and more ascetic to the eye then the traditional types made out of Rubbermaid tots. I want it to be a display in my room.

Honestly I never had to be concerned with my shotgun FC fornicating and reproducing while I was away at work, but I'm not one to rule out the potential proclivities of your acrylic beast when and if he is set loose in the wild :nonono:

Quote:
Long story short he has an extra piece of Acrylic glass (Plexiglas) That is 4ft.X8ft. 1/4in. thick ~ $160. I have already purchased an aquarium frame. The black ones you see on fish tanks. They're 48'X18'; for $35.

Your buddy wants to trade you for a 4x8 sheet of acrylic, and you want to build a shotgun FC out of it. This is seriously all you needed to express to us, and even then there is no question to be posed.

Quote:
Up until now I have only done the PF Tek, but that is all going to change. I am extremely interested in bulk substrates (coir being the main one I'm looking at).

Wow, didn't see that coming a mile away

You would not be concerned with this type of behavior or construction plans if you had already invested time and energy researching grain spawn, monotubs/casings, martha's (greenhouses), etc

Quote:
So the big question is will the fruiting chamber that I am building for PF jars work well with casing as well?

Of course, as most people who are not even TC's know, small scale casings work great in shotgun FC's.

Seriously if I could get a Trusted Cultivator I would be eternally grateful. I really need to pick someone's brain before I dig into this project.

To all the people who are knocking me, I don't understand why?

I asked for a trusted cultivator, not because I wanted to bar others. It's because alot of the time questions that are asked become disagreements between those who are trying to answer them. That's why I needed at least one person that had a good background to give me an assessment.

As for me writing to much, I'll admit I'm long winded, but it's only because I don't have pictures of it cause it's not already built, and I found it somewhat hard to explain. Maybe someone with better writing skills could do better, but that is the best I've got.

This is how I handle everything that I become interested in. I go a little over board. I'm a tinkerer, I like doing stuff with my hands, and I like taking pride in what I do. This Terrarium I'm envisioning is going to be a work of art with wood carvings built into a custom  built cabinet that I'm building for it. And I have a whole workshop full of tools, and materials so why the hell wouldn't I use them.

And I'm not doing it to show off how "Cool" I am. I'm a full grown man with a wife, and career, not some high school kid showing off. It would be for my own enjoyment. It's as much about building it as it is displaying it.

To those who don't understand that. I'm sorry I don't know what to tell you.

Well I am a published writer :2cents:  and these are my thoughts.  I realize that you want to impart all the thoughts of what you want to build and it seems you went into great detail about them which is good, yet your post is very long.  Maybe you should have made a post like.  This is what I am trying to acheive.  These are some of my thoughts on the project could someone please direct me in the right direction?  This is not OTD ppl arent going to get into that big of a disagreement.  Also limiting yourself to just a TC is totally limiting.  How do you know that some complete noob has mad experience with glass, or just has a really bright idea.  Plus there are many ppl that answered in your post who don't have that tag but I am sure are close to earning it.  The more ideas you have the better.  If you don't like an idea don't use, but don't limit yourself. :2cents:

I can respect that. Just know that I did not mean to exclude all except trusted cultivators. I was more hoping to have a trusted cultivator add their comments in addition to everyone else. In retrospect, I would have worded exactly that way so I wouldn't piss people off.

Thanks for the tips on the thread. I wish now it was more condensed, but it's done now, so oh well.

Please realize any help from anybody is apreciated. I was just hoping to get some old hands in on this one too.

Yea and I figured that you are a totally respectfull person by what I read.  You have to realize that TC's probably have to read several hundred threads a day.  To spend half an hour reading one is very time consuming.  Most ppl on this site will bend over backwards to help ppl I know this first hand.  I hope that some of the information that has been presented to you has been helpful.  I know personally several ppl that gave you ideas in this thread that aren't TC's but have invaluable insight.  You know maybe a couple ppl got pissed off, but I am sure that will be fleeting.  Ppl around here want to help ppl out.  Anyways that is over and above what needed to be said.  I wish you Gl on your FC and GL on your future grows.

If you really wanted to use glass instead of just the normal rubbermaid totes you can get drill bits that will drill through glass which would solve the fae problem. The only thing is they take a damn long time and unless your someone who's done it a lot odds are your gonna go through a heck of a lot of aquariums before you figure out how to do it right without cracking the glass.

I think it would look really cool if someone put the time and effort into doing it but it's really not at all practical.

I also have no idea if it would work the same on plexiglass or not just throwing in something to think about.

I would be using plexiglass wich is totally machinable.

Functionality:
For cakes, it should be great. Putting in bulk, maybe not such a good idea. 'dirty' air on a uncolonized substrate may not be such a good idea, and stuffing that many holes with polyfill would be very time consuming. Increase the size of the holes and make them less in number will make a much better product if you want to move to bulk.

If you want to make it really pimp, go do some research on PLC (programmable logic controllers). They are probably the most ascetically pleasing and fault tolerant way of making an automated system.

Aesthetics:
Mount some LEDs on the top/bottom shooting down the inside of the plexi. It'll light up the sides and make the holes glow like crazy.

Making removable filters for the vents could look cool.

When in doubt, add a fog machine, lasers, and a disco ball.

Ok I originally had a very long drawn out thread detailing my plans, but I got yelled at for it.

In retrospect I deserved it.

Also I asked for a trusted cultivator, and it was taken as saying I only wanted to here from a trusted cultivator which is not the case. I would like to hear from anyone with experience. I would still like to get feedback from a trusted cultivator, but please anyone with an Idea feel free.

Before I get to long winded again, please let me get on with the point.

The point. Starting Monday the week after next, I'm building a bad ass terrarium. When it is finished it is going to look exactly like a fish aquarium, but it will be made of acrylic glass, so that it can be machined. The dimensions will be 4ft. long, 1.5ft. wide, and 2ft. tall.

What's the big problem with using aquariums? FAE

How can this be solved?

Well that is the big question. One of the best answers I've come up with is to have an aquarium that can be drilled into. I am solving this problem by building it of acrylic glass?

I am as a last resort going to drill holes in it the same way you would a traditional shotgun terrarium on all six sides, and leave it that way, but I am looking at other options that would not require drilling as many holes into the face of the acrylic glass.

I have come up with some other idea's that included built in fans, but assuming the feedback on that from experienced people, I've all but abandoned it.

Anyone have any Ideas on the matter before I start tearing into the materials. I only get one shot at this so your feedback is most valuable. Feedback from anyone is appreciated. Thanks alot

use a cool mist humidifier, it will provide both fae and Humidity and you will only need one hole to plug it in.

Thanks for the tip Thyrax. What does everyone else think about this statement. Do you think it would be sufficient FAE from a cool mist humidifier?

No one has suggested drilling larger holes and filling with polyfill?  I don't know how big you can drill holes in acrylic but that should work
