Burned Bottom of Jars in PC
    #11184404 - 10/05/09 12:19 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

First shot at this.. of course I did something wrong
After experiencing this problem I looked up a solution and now know I should put more water in (there was only a few drops left when I opened the PC) and put a towel on the bottom (my 6qt PC didn't come with a rack).

Anywho, did the PC for 60 minutes.. the bottoms of the jars are pretty dark. You guys think they'll be alright?

Idk, never had it happen to me.

For future sessions, put a layer of jar lids on the bottom to elevate and that should allow you to have enough water and keep the jars above the water. You can place the dishrag on top of the jar lids after that if you want, but it's not necessary.

sorry, not trying to be an asshole
but this pic just seemed to fit

i would start over bro
those jars are toast

you are going to want to fill your PC
so the water comes about 1/2way up the sides of the jars

maybe even a tad bit less
then PC for 60 min just like you did before

dont let this get you down
shit happens, good luck next time:thumbup:

Haha, great use of the avatar.

Is it not better to keep the jars out of the water completely? I guess it doesn't really matter.

If your PC is working correctly, you should not need that much water.

I usually use about an inch of water in my PC, sometimes almost 2", but that's total no matter what size jar.  Just elevate the jar off the bottom of the PC and you'll be golden.  I'd retry if I were you, better to have it right than to try to risk it.  If you risk it, it might not work and you just lost your syringe.  D:

Good luck, you'll definitely get it right next time!

Thanks for the replies.
I'll definitely give it another try.
This batch has already been inoculated so I guess I have no reason to at least see what comes of them.

I'm trying again.. I put some jar lids on the bottom of the pressure cooker but I don't see how that's going to work. Standing the jar on the jar lids makes the jar seem to unstable and shaky, they'll surely topple over and fall on their sides while either moving it to the PC or in the PC itself.

Advice?

put a few layers of foil on top of the lids
that way it will fill in some of the gaps
and make your jars more stable

yep yep... u can actually put the jar "thru" the lid with the foil over it.  not pushing it down of coarse but just sit it directly over the lid and it holds it perfectly.

u got it this time bro

Ok, the jar lids themselves are 1/2 inch tall, so i'll try and make the water another 1/2 inch above the aluminum foil

thanks for the help

No hes talking about putting the water 1/2 inch above the lids that he was advised to put at the bottom of his pc.

I personally try to keep my jars out of the water...

I have the jar lids at the very bottom (which are 1/2in. tall), then stacked 3 sheets of aluminum foil over the jar lids.. it was recommended that one should have 1 inch of water at the top, so i was going to try and roughly measure 1/2in. above the aluminum foil to make 1 inch.

They looked much better this time!
And they are now in an open plastic container in a garbage bag above the fridge. Hoping for the best now.

Will the garbage bag restrict gas exchange? I'm questioning whether or not I should keep them in the bag or take them out.

I shattered 2 jars letting the water run out in my pot... one even adhered to the bottom of the pot....

4-days later at a steady 80 degrees and still no mycelial growth.. I don't know what I could have done wrong this time. The substrate looked so much better this time. And there was a tumbleweed of spores inhabiting the syringe, so when I shook it they dispersed pretty evenly.

Maybe I just suck at life.
Or maybe I'm just being impatient.

I'll let you know which soon.
