I think people mostly pasteurize compost, not sterilize it.

i find that if you must stero then it is best to pc a 1/2 gal jar for 2 hrs then let it sit for a 3-5 day period. by then it should start to ferment or sour or just go bad Due to germination of the high temp spores. then pc again for 2 hrs. this should get rid of any thing left in it.
i do this with pure hpoo in myco bags and have no problems it just takes a few days. and i wait till it really gets going before i pc 2nd time.
good luck...... keep us posted on the knock up.

That sounds like a terrible idea. I'm glad it works for you, and I don't think you should change anything. But that's not what I would recommend for other growers.

Most folks pasteurize bulk substrate, yes. Search engine can give you dozens or posts on why and how.

you can do sterilizing, but that really only works if you keep the substrate air tight and unexposed to everything outside of the bag or whatever you sterilized
here is a link to someone who used sterilized compost and it worked fine http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/4872154/an/0/page/0
pasteurizing is just hot enough to kill most spores but let beneficial bacteria live unfortunately some misinformed retards will argue this is wrong, however that bacteria is found in poo mostly. since you are using compost you can probably assume it has them.
the only thing i hate about pasteurizing is using a damn pillow case full of horse poo sitting in a pot with horse poop water on my stove. kind of gross so ive been buying it from vendors. but im gonna start pasteurizing it myself again.

yeah my understanding is if you sterilize your killing everything so any benefit you would be getting from using hpoo would nadda...

COMPOST?? For outdoor Cult? or do you mean CASING? Sterilizing outdoor compost is equivalent to having a Komodo dragon uses mouthwash. Might clean it for a sec, but that MFer is still going out and feeding on dead flesh every night. NOW, if yer talking about CASING SOIL, then NO, do not STERILIZE. Casing occurs at a stage when the mycelium is fully colonized and much more resistant to basic topical contamination. STERILIZING your soil will destroy the helpful and balancing microflora abounding in it. You will essentially have rooted the "lawn" of "grass" leaving plenty of space for "weeds"

you can try these wise words from a wise man-
Quote:
RogerRabbit said: Fill PC with COLD water 1/2 to 2/3 of the way up the jars. Cover and turn on the stove. Do not place the weight on your pc. Leave the vent open. Allow the water to come to a boil where you can feel steam escaping from the vent hole. Allow steam to escape for five minutes, but no longer. Shut off the stove and leave the PC alone for 1/2 an hour. Then repeat the process...bring it back up to a boil. Allow steam to escape for five minutes, but no longer. Shut off the stove and leave the PC alone for 2 hours. At that time, you can remove the jars and they'll be just right.
i use this twice a week with 100% success. his advice is for jars but i prep six 3 quart bags at once.

With every grow it is beneficial to setup a few controls to test your thoughts and ideas. Many cultivators have success without every affecting their casing soil in any way. If you are intent on pasteurizing (stop thinking about sterilizing) than test a non pasteurized tray/tub/bin and note the differences. Pasteurizing soil is a little difficult due to the size of it. Get a high thread count pillow case and follow RR's past. tek minus the lime.
