if your bag of grains is fully colonised, and you intend to mix it with the compost, you can remove the colonised grain from its bag, give it a quick rinse under the faucet, and then crumble it into a container and mix it with the compost. dont worry about the yellow water, and dont worry about being too strict on the light schedule.

This is my first time so i bought a kit with a grain bag and compost bag. I followed the instruction to a T even taking extra precation in the sterile dept. The instructions never said i NEEDED light so i after my cake was done i put in a dark room..I am now starting to put it in the light 12on12off but there is quit a bit of yellow water in the bottom of the bag now..I mean quit a bit..the sub looks good it has what i believe hyp knots..should i let it go or drain some or the met water out?

I'm a little confused. You've opened the bag and introduced to fruiting conditions? Or the bag is still closed and consolidating?

If you've opened it and are fruiting it, then I would definitely drain off the excess water.

But you'd probably be best off doing as chilly says. Take it out of the bag, clean it, and spawn it to bulk.

edit... posted b4 u xplained situation above...

If you spawned it to bulk 2 weeks ago, you should just induce pinning. Cut the top off and place the whole thing in a fc? That vent is not enough fresh air to induce pinning imho.

i thought i had to leave it closed..but you say i should open to let in more fresh air..i can do that...its supposed to be sunny tomarow so i can leave it in the light all day with the bag open.

if you are intending to fruit invitro and
if the compost and grain are fully colonised and well consolidated, which the yellow water IME is usually an indication that it is a lil'  passed "well consolidated", then you can just cut the bag at the top and expose it to some nice fresh air for a few minutes a few times a day. and fold it up when ur done...as long as you dont leave the bag open for extended periods of time, it should hold its humidity just fine in the bag.

use this method to avoid contam and then when i get my first spore print go to town on the whole idea..

its up to you man, as long as that bag is FULLY colonised you will find success.<--not a guarantee BTW

you can fruit it invitro or you can crumble it into maybe two small trays and place those trays on top of some hydrated perlite inside of a larger bin. or you can just dump the whole thing into a container suitable of creating a 3-4inch depth with what youve got in the bag. if it was your plan from the get-go to fruit in invitro, then by all means, continue with your plan. nothing can teach you better than experience.

Chilly, does the filter patch provide enuff ge to fruit it well invitro?

Also, in that picture looks like the patch is pressed against the mycelium, shouldn't it be at the top so air can get in?

i dont think that the filter is what is pictured, that looks like printed instructions- i get invitro fruits all the time without opening the bags, however its not on purpose- if i dont have everything prepped when i need it, sometimes they sit too long and begin fruiting.
rarely does this result in fruits that "you can be proud of", usually they develop into small fat balls or strange flat mushrooms that grew pressed up along the inside of the bag.
- so no, i would say that the filter patch prolly wont do on its own, it allows for a slight gas exchange to keep the mycelium alive, but not too good for the consistent fresh air exchange needed for 'good' results. <--just my opinion  dont take it as fact.

do you get more fruit by using a fc or is the bag good enough?

im not sure what your goals are-
if you are happy with just getting fruits
then the bag is 'good enough',
just open it every now and then.
but...
a larger surface area exposed to fruiting conditions will produce more than a smaller surface area, but waiting until your 130% colonised to decide is prolly not the best way to go  good luck in whatever you decide brother, hope something i said helped.

if it was me, i would crumble it into 2 trays and place them in a humid enviornment, such as a tub with a 3-5 inch thick layer of hydradted perlite. but you can do what ever you want, as im sure this wont be your only experiment.

i wouldnt dunk, no.
the substrate should be prepped with enough h20 to carry it through its first flush or two.

bad, it wont come back from that.<--strictly my opinion
if thats what you want to do, you want to do it before it fruits.

ps. that bag can be refrigerated if you need to stall it from fruiting further.
