Hot Climate Cultivation - When turining up the A/C doesn't work (just in time for the cool season)
    #11181876 - 10/04/09 07:34 PM (8 years, 11 months ago)

Local climate can pose very difficult problems for the indoor cultivator to manage.  This thread is specifically intended for temperate to extremely warm climates and how to deal with the inevitable heat problems.  Please post any helpful information you have that you’ve seen work through actual usage.  Just a note: I am a firm believer in 75-81 degree colonization and hold no interest in having a room any warmer.

Ceiling Insulation

Before running out and buying a/c units, fans or expensive cooling devices check your insulation.  Most important will be the ceiling.  I found once that the room I used specifically for cultivating button mushrooms had ZERO insulation above the ceiling while every other room was fine.  Lazy workmen strike again.  R-13 would be the thinnest insulation possible with R-30 being the best.  Keep in mind it is common for your ceiling to be 24” off center meaning you will have to purchase the big wide stuff.  If your work area is on west wall you should consider springing for the extra thick stuff.  You can do a small room with 24” wide R-30 fiberglass for around $60.  You can be amazed at how much heat reduction you can get from just reinforcing what is in your ceiling now let alone not having any.

Wall Insulation

Your wall insulation will be much more difficult to access and really only leaves the ability to insulate on top of a chosen wall.  This is obvious and space consuming not to mention you should really plastic over it to contain fiberglass.  Always insulate the wall that the SUN will travel over first and most directly. I made the mistake of insulating the exterior wall in my workspace (exterior meaning the one wall in the room shared with the outside) without regard to SOLAR AXIS.  It turned out that it was the WEST wall and the ceiling wasn’t insulated meaning that the SUN traveling EAST to WEST on the SOUTHERN axis was heating the room and then, traveling the same direction of the SUN, the heat hit the insulation and was trapped.  In an effort to block out the heat I was trapping it in.  You don’t have to be a genius, just pay attention to the SUN.  Your house and the rooms in it will heat along the same path of the SUN so WEST rooms will tend to be the hottest.  Wall insulation is nearly useless in a room with a poorly insulated ceiling.

Roof Ventilation

If you’re handy when it comes to trade skills consider the venting of your roof system.  Most homes, particularly older than 15 years, have inadequate roof ventilation.  If you have large dome vents find out if they’re passive or powered and if they’re powered are they working.  I rent and was able to get permission to install ridge vent which is a passive exhaust the runs the length of the ridge and work well with homes having gable vents and little other venting.  Whatever you can do to increase uniform air flow in your attic space is key.  If you have a friend who works in the roofing industry ask them, not a salesman or a “buddy” looking to make a buck.  The roof vent industry is full of gimmicky shite that doesn’t work.

Aluminum Paint

Something that works to a degree, but can be costly and disagreeable to the environmentally and health concerned, this product should be considered with discrimination.  Available at roofing suppliers Aluminum Paint is just that; paint with a high raw aluminum content.  Painted onto the underside of your roofs sheathing (the decking) it acts as a radiant barrier of sorts (airspace is needed between planes for a radiant barrier to be truly effective).  Very time consuming and difficult considering your have to paint every square inch between the protruding nails while in your sweltering attic space.  Also, you will be pouring death liquid all over your home.  Fuck Off.

Window Coverings/Shades

Adding exterior overhang or direct sun blockage with a sun screen or DIY heavy fabric screen will help tremendously if you have a window receiving direct sunlight during the hot hours of the day.

Quickie Notes

• Gain an understanding of the SUN’s path and it’s effect on your house BEFORE setting a workspace if possible.  East and North (NE is best) rooms better than West and South (SW worst)
• $$ Spent on Ceiling insulation is higher priority than cooling devices if an insubstantial amount is currently installed.  An increase from R-13 to R-30 will result in 5-10 degree reduction during the hottest parts of the day.
• Keep colonizing items lower to the ground where it’s a little cooler.
• When planning climate control keep in mind your different stages of cultivation.  If using air-circulating devices remember to plan for the times when you must have a still air environment or extra heat reduction during incubation or harvest.
