rusty 55 gallon drum
    #11179828 - 10/04/09 01:09 PM (8 years, 2 months ago)

so I went behind a store today and saw a 55 gallon drum that was sitting there. It was metal but had rust on the inside walls in some areas and almost covering the bottom?
Is this okay to pasteurize with?

Think it will hold the weight? 50 gallons of water = 400 pounds.

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

try going at that rust with a wire brush or an angle grinder if you've got one.... wear a dust mask

I've actually obtained a container that is half of an old oil container. Bigger than a 55 gallon drum.
My friend got it from a junkyard and used it 2 yrs ago for heating plant soil he was experimenting with...
but NOW I have it and I want to do bulk straw pasteurization.

Bottom is a bit rusty and I will scrub that...there also are a couple of those rust cracks.
You think there is a way I can patch that right up? SOmething that can withstand temps of a long burning fire (couple of hrs)?
thanks

One thing I can think of would be to get some sheet metal, cut and weld it to fit inside like a liner. But, if you do that, you might as well build the whole thing from the start.

I'd say fill it with water just to see if it holds the weight.

To test it under flame, fill it up over the stoked fire, stand back!

A friend and I did it with a rusty 55 drum, well, not that rusty. The outside a bit, but the inside was fresh paint and it was made for holding organic food.

Good luck bud, you could get a whole lot of straw done with that baby.:crazy2:
