Its not nessecary but it is a really really good idea.
This is what can happen if you dont use a PC.

Same batch but no contam. When I used a PC I didnt lose any jars. Long story short couldnt find the PC so I boiled the jars for 90min instead. 1 out of 4 contamned.

At first I thought the green lines where contam...

So I can expect 1/4 to contam..

Do you think boiling longer with deeper water would help?

Your best bet is to steam your jars, wait 24hrs and recook them.
search 'fractional sterilization'

You might have no contam or they all might. I only had the one. It may be worth boiling them again. That is something that I didnt do. It would be intresting to see if it makes a difference.

Three boils is good if you want to play it safe.  Boil day one, wait, boil day two, wait, boil day three, inoculate.  I've yet to try it, but I've seen several threads popping up lately at mycotopia with fractionally sterilized popcorn that they seem to be having some success with.  I think popcorn is the easiest grain to fractional sterilize, at least that's what it seems.

I guess I just don't get it.... Why can't you make a 40 dollar investment on a small pressure cooker?  Hell, if you spent the 80 to 100 dollars on the larger one, it would make your life in this hobby SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much easier.  In the grand scheme of things that is such a small price to pay when you think of how much time effort and money you spend on this hobby.  It pays for itself in that respect.

Being a successful culty is about being good at what you can control and recognizing the things you cant.  Like AA.  If a culty isn't willing to get the VERY basic (like a small PC) then you will never be able to do anything more than second guess every step of your procedure when a contam or problem arises.  Steaming might work, but results in a major step NOT being a controlled situation and leads to grey area (you just dont know where the problem might've started). At least with a properly rinsed, soaked, simmered and PC'd jar of substrate you can be pretty sure contams occurred somewhere in your sterile procedure and not your food source.

get a pc. 70 minutes at 15 psi wont work for me sometimes. I think it would be a waste of time to try steaming

if you've got no pc, its not a waste of time to steam... maybe a waste of time waiting for the pc

fractal sterilization has worked for many, i'm not only the prez, but i'm a client
