Does anyone homebrew?

Just wondering. Thinking about trying it out, I love good beer. :guinness:

A buddy of mine used to homebrew.  The shit he made was pretty good until he decided to try to make "good" beer.  Once he got into that holiday/spiced/hoppy "quality" beer it started looking & tasting like shit.

Keep it simple, you'll be pleased (unless you turn out to be a "green thumb" of brewing)

I've got my first batch in the bottles as we "speak." I've got two more weeks until carbonation properly sets in.  It was super easy (especially if your used to the sanitary precautions required by mushroom cultivation) and put me back about...$50 for my first batch.  Not counting beer bottles (which I had to drink) or caps and bottle capper.  If you have a homebrew shop near you, check out what they have as far as beginner's kits.  Also check the culinary forum on here for tips.  And homebrewtalk.com for a good forum to search thru.

good friend of mine does it. Its usually really good but occasionally the beer is flat.

the Culinary Arts forum probably has a lot of info about homebrewing

I home brew, I also make mead, hard cider and have a batch of watermelon wine going.

Here's some pics of my set up.

It cost me around $400 for the brewing gear and about $400 more for the kegging gear (including the used fridge). There are ways to make somethings yourself for less, but you have to know what you need first. Since there isn't anyone by me to show me cheaper ways to make things, I just spent the money. However, I make beer for so cheap that my gear has probably paid for itself already. I make 5 gallons for $15 to $20, depending on the recipe, and 5 gallons is 52 beers. I just paid less than $70 for 100 lbs of malted barley, and I can make about 100 to 120 gallons out of it, I only need to buy small amounts of specialty grains plus hops and yeast, all of which are relatively cheap.

You'll need;

boil pot (get an oversized one around 9 gallons)

mash tun (pot with spigot and strainer, these can be made from ice chests)

racking cane for siphoning

fermenter (6 gallon food grade plastic buckets work best, I have 8 of them)

airlock & rubber stopper

if you bottle your beer you'll need at least 150 bottles (no twist offs, they leak carbonation and your beer will be flat)

bottle capper

if you keg you'll need soda kegs

CO2 tank

regulator with hoses and fittings

taps

spare fridge

home brewing is awesome.  I only brew during the winter because for some reason that is when i have money to do it.  But your favorite beer will taste better if you brew it, and you can also tweak it to your liking.  I recommend it to anybody who has a little extra money to do it and likes good beer

I agree with this^^^

I've only got an account so that I can search.

I'm doing three gallon batches ~30 beers.  I don't drink that much nor do I have buddies that drink that much, so I don't see the point for me personally to dedicate that much cash to it all.

FYI, You can get going for about $100 bucks with a plastic bucket primary fermenter and a few other necessities.

What yacub has is a dedicated brewer's setup.

Check out stonesun's setup!  It's sick. He's got everything you'll ever want!

Home brewing is fun, but personally I would start with wine.  It is much easier from my experience.  You can just go pick some muscadine where I am from, add some sugar, water, and wine yeast.  Let it sit.  But i have been known to distill a little of it too.  Thats the good shit.

I have seen a ton of brewing equipment at garage sales. I am pretty sure you can make some of the equipment. The hardest part of brewing for me (and it's really not hard) is keeping everything sterile. other then that it's just boiling stuff with specific temps and times, it's all pretty easy. my local brew supply store has a huge book of recipes with photocopies so you can take the recipe with you. I imagine the same is true for most brew supply stores. I would encourage you to give it a try, it is a pretty fun hobby.

Been brewing beer with my dad since I was a youngan. Don't really enjoy the taste of home brew its not sweet enough carbonated enough and quite often to dark. The ciders we have been making lately aren't to bad but we haven't yet perfected the art of getting the yeast out.

However we have recently started disstilling and that is fantastic. So much sambuca, whiskey and vodka so much. We currently have about 10 litres of ~40% rum/whiskey then about 10L ~40% cocktail mixers and ~10L of 80%+ vodka. Cant wait to start making tincture's. But the idea at the moment is to save up for Christmas eve and then just big party to pass the waiting.

A word of warning make sure the yeast has stopped fermenting before bottling many a time have I heard a nice boom from the shed as the bottles explode, closely followed to cleaning the shed.

I guess it doesn't count but I used to make sake at home. It was funny, my parents didn't think it would really be alcoholic so they let me do it in the kitchen.
