Re: some type of gym? [Re: truffleupagus]

I would also call these G. luteus.  The only field guide I know of that even has them listed is Edible Wild Mushrooms of North America: A Field-To-Kitchen Guide.  And it doesn't have a description.  This is because the differences between G. luteus and G. spectabilis are small, meaning microscopic.  Macroscopically, in the field, the two mushrooms can look very different.  To me they are as different as night and day.

I describe the smell as anise-like.  Few BLG's I've ever picked smelled that way.

more gyms? [Re: Mr. Mushrooms]
    #11153891 - 09/29/09 10:17 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

So I found these today all growing on and around a stump (on wood from the stump), also on my parents property where I found the gym log.  Are these gyms too though?  I'm inclined to say yes but the caps look quite a bit different.  They're a little sticky to the touch, aren't really bruising, and the bigger ones are lighter colored in the center and darker on the outsides.  Other than that, they pretty much look identical to the others.

Another thing that I noticed is that most of the bigger ones with open caps don't have rings.  But we've had a lot of rain over the last few days.  Could that be why and are they maybe just a little water logged?  Lastly, there's a few that are quite small and I would think they would still have unopened veils but they don't.  Little with gills visible.  Could it be because they were clustered and stunted?

Thanks!

These smell pretty gymmy too, btw.

I dont believe these new ones you have found are gyms. If i remember, Gymnopilus dont have sticky caps. Also, I dont see those different colored(zonates?) ares on teh caps to be usualy of gymnopilus.

I would take a spore print. If it is a gymnopilus it should be orange.

I dunno what they are but I say they arent gymnopilus.

Anybody know what these new ones may be?

Pholiota I'd say.

Damn!  Yeah, that crossed my mind but I was just hoping I really lucked out.

I'll do a few prints and report back.

If they are, would it be limonella maybe?

EDIT:  Scratch that.  If anything, I think they're alnicola.

I don't know.  I must be color blind.  I guess I can't tell the difference between rusty brown and rusty brown to orange-brown.:lol:

These are definitely in the alnicola bunch though.  I'm not about to taste any to see which one.

Thanks again for the help.  I feel bad for these victims of entheo-vision.  Didn't realize there was anything that looked quite so close to lutes.

On second thought, the print on the first page of this thread is lighter.  Needed to see them side by side.

Yes, those are real foolers.  Close, but no cigar as they say.  The reddish tones on the stem and it's shape was an immediate tip-off for me.  Glad you caught that in time.

Yeah, the caps are a little too conical.

Can never be too much of a skeptic in this field.

Another good indicator those aren't gyms - your pics show a white fibrilose annulus

Gyms will have a yellow -yellow/green fibrilose annulus!!

Cool finds - its great to catch some that almost fooled everyone!! Peace:smile:

Yeah, the next day I held a smaller one up to a smaller gym.  I noticed that too.

May of found Gymnopilus Penetrans. Edibility is poisonous so I would stay away from them.
