Improving my philosophical understanding.
    #11175170 - 10/03/09 03:55 PM (8 years, 22 days ago)

Whenever I pop into this forum I really enjoy reading through the arguements and ideas that many who frequent this forum have to type.

I've tried reading some material from traditional philosophers (Nietzsche, Kafka, Plato, etc), but find it doesnt really get me that far.

Anyone want to drop me some decent names to start out with?

(really a philosophical newbie here)

Allan Whats, If you look on the torrents I found a speaking summary or reading (I'm not sure which) of him on the subject of his book The joker.

Nietzsche, Kafka, Plato

If you are interested in Western Philosophy, and actual writings of Western philosophers don't get you that far then maybe you should start out with Will Durant's The Story of Philosophy.

Pick up an Intro to Philosophy book on Ebay.  You can get a good one for five bucks shipped.

Take a Philosophy 101 course

To understand philosophy quickly you need to go through all the major philosophers up to this point

so basically:

Pre-Socratics/Socrates -> Plato -> Aristotle -> St. Aquinas/St. Augustine -> Descartes -> Locke -> Hume -> Kant -> Rousseau -> Hegel -> Keirkegaard -> Schopenhauer -> Neitzsche -> Whitehead -> Wittgenstein -> Camus/Sartre -> Heiddeger -> Jung/Frued (optional) -> Derrida -> Foucault

If anyone disagrees with the list I suggest they present their own, I think this is a good list of the major thinkers of western history

^ Pretty good list... I'd throw Spinoza in there though  and perhaps Hobbes

Isn't western philosophy where we went wrong through?

I'm asking because I am truly curious..  I know I've read a couple of these names you've listed in the past, but I couldn't quote anyone; and it seems western philosophy created the mess our society as a whole is in today..

philosophers arent typically that important for statesmen and those with power over the people... I do not see how your generalization which blames western philosophy as creator (or had any sort of important part) with the mess that you consider our society today is at all founded. And even then is pretty hard to just generalize what is truly western philosophy....

that's kind of why I was asking..

the few I have chose to read on that list created my current view on western philosophy though. (religion/politics&law)

philosophy brought about the scientific method. It's is the way that we make our decisions rather than the conclusions that win the day.

If you are going to delve into philosophy, you must realize how MUCH philosophies there are out there.
Start by narrowing your focus. Do you want to start with Eastern or Western philosophy?
If Western:
-Buy a book about the Pre Socratics. I suggest the book "The Presocratics" by Wheelwright.
--Start there. From the Presocratics, decide if you'd like to pursue Existentialism, Ethics, Logic, etc. If you want existentialism, start reading some Nietzsche and Kierkergaard.
For Eastern Phil:
-I'm not sure about the beginnings, but definitely start reading the Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu. If you'd like a book suggestion that breaks down each verse of the Tao Te Ching, check out the book "Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life" Here's an amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/Change-Your-Thoughts-Living-Wisdom/dp/1401911846
Personally I absolutely love that book.
Also, check out "Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind" by Shunryu Suzuki if you're wanting an introduction to Zen Buddhist thought.

Good luck. Just remember, question everything.

East and West are both neurotic.  West is just a little less proud of it.

Actually the west appears to be by far the most neurotic although with the americanization of the east they are catching up fast.
