Southeastern Region (Alabama) NEED HELP
    #11174610 - 10/03/09 02:08 PM (8 years, 17 days ago)

* Habitat: Cow manure, in a field with about 5 inch grass
* Characteristics of the gills: were close together
* Characteristics of the stem: Pretty thick stem, about half as thick as your pinky finger. White stem.
* Characteristics of the cap: round
* Spore print color: Don't know what this means, but they were gray.
* Color that the mushroom bruises:
* Anything else you might find important:
I have pictures of the cap, I'm pretty new to this. (it's wet because I've left them in a plastic bag outside underneath a black shirt, to dry them out.)

There was more spores before it got wet. This is what it looks like now^

Looks much like the one on the left, before I picked it. Except the stem was whiter and didn't have that thing underneath the cap.
Is it legit?

Never put mushrooms in plastic bags, they rot and melt and turn gooey.

use paper bags to collect them or wrap them in wax paper. they need to breathe. as for drying them there are many different methods, do a forum search.  if your wanting to get good id's on this forum you need to fill out a proper id request. info on that can be found here.

I know it takes a lot more time than simply posting pictures but you'll get much better responses if you take the time to fill one out.

Keep hunting!

I did fill it out. It's at the very top above the pictures. I'm thinking about just letting them dry outside, because any other way I'm afraid my parents would find them.

Oh and also, I never zipped up the bag. They've been able to breath.

Sorry bout that, I missed the info on top. Anyways not trying to ride you about the plastic bags but paper bags are the way to go and much cheaper then using ziplocks.

After reading the info you provided you stated you didn't know what a spore print was.  Basically you take the mushroom and cut the stem off close to the cap.  Then you lay the cap gills-down on some foil for a few hours or preferably overnight.  If your specimens haven't already dropped their spores they will leave behind a spore print on the foil.  Spore color is very important in identifying mushrooms (plus they're cool looking).  Hope this helps in the future.

Welcome to the Shroomery

Well the color of the liquid when they were heated in the plastic bag was like a black-ish tone so I guess you could say that's important, maybe?

That is an inactive, rotten Panaeolus species of some kind.  Maybe P. antillarum.

"That thing underneath the cap" is called the annulus or veil.

The exact same ones I picked. They are P. antillarum.

And on here; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panaeolus
It is on the list of ones that are hallucinogenic, and I've looked up to see if they were, and I'm getting some positive results.

Also, how am I to tell the difference between P. antillarum and P. cyanescens?

Where on the wiki does it say P. antillarum contains psilocybin??  That says a list of notable species.
