lazy myc
    #11174120 - 10/03/09 12:02 PM (8 years, 21 days ago)

jars seem to be just camping around and not getting the inside of the sub colonized, 95% of the outer is colonized but you can tell it hasent penetrated the sub more than 3/4 inch. today is day 25, the goal was to wait around 11 more days and they should be done. thats longer than any other pf tek ive had, do you think its because of extra water inside? even though all i see is normal condensation... or is it not enough gas exchange?

i feel like 5 and a half weeks is quite slow

temp is consistent 75

most likely theres something wrong with the substrate. Make sure the BRF is light and fluffy, not heavy and sludge like. What ratio did you use?

i dont remember the formula but it was smack dab in between what RR's video and numerous other post's verm/brf/water formula. when i mixed it up i felt it and it wasnt too watery and had good consistency. the myc is all thick and looks really really strong, its just slow to colonize the inside of the jars

should i loosen the lids on them and see if that evaporates a tiny bit of water if there is in fact too much? i just dont think its the water content thats the problem personally

theres got to be something making these jars colonize so slowly. its day 32 and now the jars just got fully colonized on the outside. i can tell that the mycelium is only around 1/4 inch towards the bottom. is it uncommon to have cakes colonize for 7 weeks? or is this something that just happens when you get a "sludgy" mixture, just too much water, or maybe too compact?

Well that's probably your trouble. 2:1:1 is the Golden Ratio. At lest for beginners- you can get fancy later.

Too cold or too wet or too hot or too dry are all bad. Check for all those and more. Could be contams too.

I think your best bet is to make more jars and just leave these alone to do what they want. Either they will colonize or they will contam. Or they'll just sit there.

How can you tell its not colinised in the middle?? you cant see inside the substrate.

that is a long time and is definatly a sign something is not quite right.

Adjusting the moisture content of the substrate is a good idea as different grades of verm hold different amounts of water. 2:1 ratio is not a golden mix, its a general guide that should work for most. When adjusting moisture content you should be looking for feild capacity, or as i prefer slightly drier. Dont go wetter which will just slow colinisation down.

Finer verm holds more moisture than coarse,

the strain is amazonian, and fine verm was used. but yes it was 2:1:1 thats what i used, i hadnt looked back to see what it was but thats what i used. none of the sub was compacted except the dry verm layer on top just enough to get a smooth surface. the c olonization has NOT stopped. lately ive been looking every 4 days and its just being slow. looking into what ive done i think somehow the water ratio somehow got muffed up.

they SHOULD be done this friday my close guesstimization

I prefer slightly drier as well. Usually colonizes faster and if needed you can always add more water. Less is more.

If you are asking me, then no. Leave them uncovered, that is what the dry verm barrier is for.

You were asking the OP.

tomorrow marks week 6 and all of the jars are fully colonized on the outside. however it looks like the mycelium is not that thick, maybe half inch and i dont think its penetrated the middle areas.

should i sacrifice one of them and see if its gone all the way through?

i feel like i should take out a cake and see if its colonized all the way and if it is i can just assume the rest are and continue on, but if it isnt; i can just cruble and case?

i need some real advice on if you were in my shoes and had cakes going extremely slowwww...6 weeks is a long ass time

thanks

im probably gonna get fried for saying this but after 6 weeks its likely that 1 of 2 things is slowing you down ... the sub became to wet and thus compacted after time , not allowing the myc to penetrate or the moisture in your cake has been wicked out through the top and the remaining sub is too dry to support myc life ...

if you really feel up to sacrificing a jar you can ... if all were made from the same batch it will likely be the answer to the whole lot .. ive taken cakes out that had no chance of colonizing the sub left ... washed off the bad sub and soaked the remaining mycelial cluster and fruited it as some mishappen ugly clump ..

if its been 6 weeks I would just birth them now And cut off the uncolonized parts and fruit them in a pop bottle that way there quarantined.

6 weeks means something not right, Are you using tall 1/2 pint jars?? also it should not be too wet if you followed the 2:1:1 ratio.
