Stressing cacti cuttings
    #11171018 - 10/02/09 05:09 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

So I took about 6 6inch cuttings (half fresh 6 month cuttings and half 3+ year cuttings) and currently have them sitting in a dark, temperature controlled room.

I was wondering how long I should stress these cuttings before I go about turning them into a delicious brew or extract?

IMO, and most others here, you don't need to stress them, it doesn't do anything

I've read a bunch of different claims about this. I've heard when they approach dormancy they produce more mescaline, i've read when they incur small external damage they produce more(simulating bugs), and a bunch of other random stuff.
However, I've probably read just as many reports of it being bs.
I've never seen any credible sources commenting for or against it, nor have I seen anyone test a cactus before and after stressing it. You often see people who claim it works say they tried a stressed cutting, and an unstressed cutting, but that's really not definitive in any way, shape, or form

I doubt stressing's impact, but am way too lazy to try it myself. I'd rather leave it on the cactus and let it grow for the 6-8 months to get another dose out of it.

I yell at my cuttings before I brew them.  Maybe smack around one of my other plants right in front of it.  seems to really up the alkaloid content IME.

alkaloids become concentrated as the cactus loose water.
