Amanita Muscaria ID Request 1

Hello, I am a long time listener and first time caller. I came across this specimen in a wooded park in Vancouver, British Columbia. The next day I decided to go back and pick it. I didn't put much thought into my initial indentification as Amanita Muscaria, as I didn't quite realize there are so many similar-looking varieties of amanita. Though, I'm not sure how many are in my area. As such, I quite soon after cut up the mushroom and it has been drying since about eight hours ago (I regret this stupid mistake, and wish I had taken more pictures first, especially of the base; I don't remember seeing concentric rings, and now I doubt that it is, in fact, A. Muscaria). I took a few pictures with my cellular phone, and I apologize for the poor quality. Perhaps you can still lend some wisdom. Thanks for your help.
Images:
Habitat: In the woods, growing on the ground near trees.
Gills: Gills are white and free.
Stem: Nearly eight inches long, two inches in diameter. White, thick, solid, with ring and volva.
Cap: Close to eight inches in diameter, orange with red center, convex
Spore print color: Didn't take one; do all amanitas not have white spore prints?
Bruising: No bruising
Other information: A similar amanita was nearby, as far as I remember it was redder and less mature (cap was globose). However, it looked like someone had kicked it or an animal had taken a good bite. There was also another young specimen on the other side of the park, and it was completely yellow. The collected specimen seemed delicious but I refrained from eating it.

Thanks for the input, I think you're probably right. I'm going to see if I can find the base of the stem tomorrow morning and take a closer look; I broke the mushroom off near the base when I picked it. Might be in luck, but still interested to see what others have to say.

It's a beauty either way. Clear pics of the base, as you mentioned, are what's needed. Hopefully, you find a whole patch!

Looks like a faded red/orange form of Amanita amerimuscaria
The younger yellow specimen is likely A. muscaria

Thank you for the replies. Here are some more pictures; I found many more identical amanitas while hunting this morning. The pictures that look like just a bulb are the base of the mushroom originally photographed. Whatever these are, they are certainly beautiful. They do look like amerimuscaria, but I didn't see rings on the base of the one I picked, though it looks like others may have rings. Do you think they are safe to eat? I need to invest in a better camera; in the meantime, I'll try to compensate for quality with quantity.

..that link is the source of a considerable amount of misinformation.
Amanita muscaria var. formosa is a synonym of A. muscaria.
The Fly-agaric found in the eastern U.S is the yellow form of Amanita amerimuscaria nom. prov., or what was called Amanita muscaria var. guessowii

if it is indeed Aminita Amerimuscaria, then imo, yes...great! Personally i love to eat A.Amerimuscaria fresh-they taste amazing, but you dont wana eat alot fresh because ibotenic acid could make u feel sick. If you want to consume them as food, and get a decent buzz too, i would reccomend picking fresh specimens, boiling them in water, poor the water off into a dish, and then you can eat the mushroom with no ill affects, so i understand. And if you mix the water in with tea or coffee, the heat converted the ibotenic acid into mucimol, and allows for a soothing cup of Mucimol Coffee, with your Aminita Omelete =D, as far as dosage amounts, i would reccomend asking around alot more. And always start small with Mucimol, it affects everyone different.

..heat/boiling will not convert the ibotenic acid into muscimol, only drying will, through a process called decarboxylation.

I thought that once Ibotenic acid reached a certain temp, it slowly converted into mucimol? I meen, id take ur word over mine any day. just saying. Btw this is where i got alot of my recipes. Aminita Muscaria Reports You should read up on this if you are concidering consuming them, for whatever reason

"Nielsen and coworkers independently explored the nonenzymatic decarboxylation of ibotenic acid, reporting that ibotenic acid was stable in water even at 378C overnight and only after its exposure to boiling water at pH extremes over the course of several hours was any decarboxylation to muscimol noted"

Thanks to everyone for their input, especially warriorsoul for the positive ID. One question I have, though: would you say for sure that the first one I picked would be muscaria as well? It wasn't in the same patch as the others; I can't be positive that it had clear concentric rings, but it was found in the same small park, probably a few hundred feet or so down a trail, more or less alone (there was one more about 20 feet away, but it was significantly damaged). The reason I ask is that I've already dried it nicely; should I throw it out to be sure or is it safe to assume its the same? Thanks again for everyone's help!

Also, warrior soul you mentioned that the yellow form is found in eastern US; this was found in the PNW, Vancouver BC. Is this variety in fact found all over north america?

Based on location, it's never safe to assume it's the same. It would have to be ID'ed by its characteristics like the others.

Your PNW yellow is a form of A. muscaria. The eastern U.S yellow is a form of A. amerimuscaria.
