    #11173072 - 10/03/09 03:16 AM (8 years, 15 days ago)

any downside experience from using 50mm (2 inch) petri dishes for agar?
Standard I see are 90 mm (3 1/2 inch) right?

They are tiny and harder to work with- but much cheaper.
Ok to start with, but I guess you'll want the big 3-sectional ones eventually.

why 3 sectional?
the plain ones with no divides seem fine.
what are the benefits?

Three cultures in one dish. Less work, less space, less hassle, less money.
But the little ones will work fine for now, while you get started.

what if one of the sections gets contaminated? I guess as you get better you don't really want to even think of contams haha

You transfer healthy material away from contams into another dish.

If you do it right, you think about- and maintain- sterility. No matter how long you've been working.

But the little 50mm will work fine, get those. If/when you graduate to the bigger petris, you'll still have uses for the little ones.

i only use 50mm PP petri dishes . they are the absolute best.
they only need half the amount of agar. thet are dirt cheep. and just find the PP ones and you can reuse them 1000s of times.
